yo ED,

WELCOME!

Please take it to a local parts store that does Free scans for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs); Advance Auto, or a mom & pop shop, AAMCO...etc.

I run it around to heat the engine up and shift thru all gears incl Reverse.

then; turn off all accesories/lights, etc.

Have them Do KOEO portion first

For Key On Engine Running (KOER) portion, the engine has to be still @ normal operating temp.

If they say the KOER isn't necessary, ask them politely to do it anyway.

Post any codes found here or look em up in my broncolinks.com site in the Search feature

If you have or know anyone that has a timing light; Check Timing;

Adjustment in Ford EFI Engines

Of course there are more that could be tested; do that stuff first

yo Ed,

Sorry for the delay; Comcast finally figured that their underground cable box next to the Lake here really wasn't a good idea!

So, they pulled it all out, thru the wookds all the way to granny's house.. but never came back..lol; So I am on da road and won'r have *** PC cable access for awhile; or maybe never again...

Look at this instead of touching the PCM

DTC P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency below Threshold (Bank 1); Symptoms, Causes & Possible Solutions;

Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe

Source: by obd-codes.com at http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/generic/p0420-catalyst-efficiency-below-threshold-bank-1.php'>http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/generic/p0420-catalyst-efficiency-below-threshold-bank-1.php

& then;

DTC P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1); "...( Indicates Bank 1 catalyst system efficiency is below the acceptable threshold;

Use of leaded fuel

Damaged HO2S

Malfunctioning ECT (were both KOEO and KOER tests done so this can be ruled out since there isn't a DTC for the ECT?)

High fuel pressure

Damaged exhaust manifold

Damaged catalytic converter

Oil contamination

Cylinder misfiring

Downstream HO2S wires improperly connected

Damaged exhaust system pipe

Damaged muffler/tailpipe assembly

******** spark timing

Compare HO2S upstream & downstream switch rate. Under normal closed loop fuel conditions, high efficiency catalysts have oxygen storage which makes the switching frequency of the downstream HO2S quite slow compared to the upstream HO2S. As catalyst efficiency deteriorates, its ability to store oxygen declines and the downstream HO2S signal begins to switch more rapidly approaching the switching rate of the upstream HO2S. Once beyond an acceptable limit the DTC is set.

--------------

I can't copy the all da possible reasons / info @ http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes so go thru the eziest and cheapest tests first by slingblde and them, such as checking for an exhaust leak(s)

For the CAT leak - look at the air tube to da cat from the Air Injection Systems check valve behind engine near firewall; the valves and it's tubing rust out .. mine ck valve rusted out @ 70k miles;; esp listed for an exh leak sound while aceelerating.

Ck O2 sensor(s0 Wiring and connectors; corrosion. shorting out

Identification & Location; "...Regardless of how the engine is mounted in the vehicle, conventional or transverse, the HO2S naming convention stays the same in relationship to engine banks 1 and 2. Bank 1 will always be the bank containing the #1 cylinder (Passenger Side). Bank 2 is the driver's side. Sensor 1 is da upstream sensor, between the engine & the catalytic converter. Sensor 2 (DOWNSTREAM) is after the converter (it is actually monitors the catalytic converter's eficiency) See Fig. 1 in TSB 01-9-7..."
