Okay, so I was really poor and decided that I *needed* to have a tach in my Bronco. So I scoured eBay and found an old Archerkit tachometer. Archerkit makes (or used to make?) a lot of electronics kits for people who like to put together things like that. Transistor radios, etc. Basically a hobby kit.

So I've had it installed for a long time, and I calibrated it the way they told me when I bought it. But I've always wondered how accurate it is.

So, what's the redline for a 5.8L EFI motor? What does it normally idle at?

I'm just trying to get some kind of basis for comparison. According to my tach, I idle at 800-600rpm, and I have yet to get the RPMS over 4k, even under hard acceleration. Do these sound like normal numbers, or should I just buck up and buy a normal tach like everyone else :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Hmm, so the bottom end sounds good, but the top end doesn't.

My Bronco is an automatic, and when I turn off the overdrive and stomp the throttle, the powerband kicks in at about 2400rpm and hits 3k really quick, then slowly climbs above that to like 3500, but at that point I don't feel comfortable keeping on the throttle, as the engine is really roaring at that point (not to mention I'll be going 75mph in 3rd gear).

Hmm, maybe I should just buy a new tach.

i have the 87 302 efi and i put mine to 6000 all the time. i bet if you push it, it will go there. most people don't go to the redline, the only go untill their engine makes funky nioses. i get them noises too, but i really don't care. yes i think i'm really ******* my junk... for a ford sb i think 5000 is low. my 302 has a bit better than 300,000kms. this is only my op. 5.8 should have no problems hitting 6g, but if it has problems, 6g won't fix issues.
