I got a 92 bronco with 351w. I bored it out .030 and have an aftermarket cam and edelbrock performance intake manifold. I only got about 8000 miles on this fresh engine.

In ran pretty good when i first started driving it, but now the idle is very aggressive and is not steady at all. But while om driving in runs ****.

I also have shorty headers on it, and it has developed a huge exhaust leak.

Would anyone have an idea whats wrong? Besides the leak.

And also when i first ignite it, a puff of black smoke comes out.

WELCOME!!

Exhaust Color Diagnosis; Smoke, White, Blue or Black, General
Source: by freeasestudyguides

Black exhaust smoke is an indication of rich fuel condition. These are possible causes:

Fuel Injectors: A leaking fuel injector will cause a rich fuel condition.

Fuel Pressure Regulator: A stuck closed fuel pressure regulator will cause a rich fuel condition.

Fuel Return: A restricted fuel return line will cause a rich fuel condition.

dirty air filter: Replace the air filter

Pull vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator with engine off and cold; any gas aroma or gas in it, replace bec the diaphram is defective.

Try a Self Test for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)s by my pal, BroncoJoe19
http://broncozone.co..._mode__threaded

The engine temperature must be greater than 50° F for the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Self-Test and greater than 180° F for the Key On Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test.
Run it around to heat the engine up and shift thru all gears incl Reverse. Then turn off all accessories/lights, etc.

Make sure A/C is off and transmission is in Park (automatic) or in Neutral for a Manual & release clutch.

Do Key On Engine Off (KOEO) portion first.

And Post em here according to:
KOEO
&
KOER

Hey Mike ,

Welcome.

Are you runnig the original FI or do you have a carb set up?

What you are describing is a common problem with a mal-adjusted carb on an engine with a performance cam.

It's a matter of getting all the carb adjustments right for proper mixture through all the rpm range.

Let us know more details on your intake setup and we can go from there.

Good Luck
