You didn't buy the most economical vehicle. Broncos wern't designed with economy in mind and gas wasn't as expensive then. Power and MPG don't necessarily go together. You need to burn something to get real power and that means sucking in more air and fuel. The best for MPG in this truck is a well tuned engine and all systems, that are either controlled or sensed by the computer, working as designed.

Keep your right foot inside the passenger compartment, let the cruise control handle the engine whenever possible (it will be more consistant than you), make sure your tires are inflated properly, use the recommended fuel grade for the engine (using other than the grade your engine is designed for only reduces MPG), keep the A/C off (depending on where you live that may not be a problem right now, where I live I can get along without A/C 365).

Beyond that you will be spending money chasing the MPG butterfly :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> . I'd put the first 250 into a tune up and if you can do it yourself, have enough left over to eat at McDonalds :-" . 250 might get you a new stock exhaust system, ( I put a stock two tail pipe muffler on mine and it rumbles just fine

Good luck,

I know I will never get 20 mpg and I'm fine with that. Just gave "oj" a tune up and am sitting at about 10 1/2 mpg. I'm looking for performance. My question was in referance to my intended coarse of action. Any thoughts.

With an EFI engine, there is not a lot you can do without making your truck street illegal. There are performance chips on the market and you might want to take a look at them. All systems functioning as designed and no vacuum leaks are important for the existing computer chip to run the engine at it's best. A KN filter kit is supposed to increase HP by a couple. Electric fan vs the belt driven one will allow more of the existing HP to make it to the wheels. Same with an electric water pump. Depending on where you are going to mostly operate the truck nmight influance the gearing choice. I believe that there is a good chart in the Jeff's Bronco graveyard that is intended to help make the gearing decision. It shows wher the best gearing vs tire size will operate the engine at the optimum rpm. I'm sure someone else on this forum can suggest some other options, I have neglected, that will keep it street legal.

Oh yah, welcome to the Zone.

PS. I didn't mention the obvious, like doing things to the engine internals or droping in a larger engine. Mainly because tohoe things become expensive, not that some that I already mentioned aren't.

You might look at getting a shift kit for the tranny, most run about $125-$150. TransGo or B&M are two brands. These work well with a programmer or chip, for your engine computer, although I don't know if you can still get a "chip" for a '91 model. Check with HyperTech or JetChips.
