You didn't buy the most economical vehicle. Broncos wern't designed with economy in mind and gas wasn't as expensive then. Power and MPG don't necessarily go together. You need to burn something to get real power and that means sucking in more air and fuel. The best for MPG in this truck is a well tuned engine and all systems, that are either controlled or sensed by the computer, working as designed.
Keep your right foot inside the passenger compartment, let the cruise control handle the engine whenever possible (it will be more consistant than you), make sure your tires are inflated properly, use the recommended fuel grade for the engine (using other than the grade your engine is designed for only reduces MPG), keep the A/C off (depending on where you live that may not be a problem right now, where I live I can get along without A/C 365).
Beyond that you will be spending money chasing the MPG butterfly
