I was wondering if any of you have changed the ignition switch in an '89 ford bronco XLT without tilt wheel. If you have any tips on replacing it, please post, because i've heard that its a pain in the a$$.

I've heard that there hard to change in the body style '87-'92. My grandpa had a '89 half ton ford, and he said it took him a good 4 hours to replace it and he said that he was to the point where he was going to have some one else try to change it. :( /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I don't suppose you are confusing the key cylinder on the upper column with the ignition switch it operates via a push rod on the upper side of the lower column are you?

Good luck,

:)>-

So if I replace the ignition lock cylinder I won't have to turn my key back to get my blinkers to work?

it was easy to change on my 88. I just took off the piece that covers the column and fuse box, then take the shroud off the steering column so you can undo the wire that goes to the gauges(for an auto tranny) that shows what gear you are in. then undo the two bolts that hold up the column and it will lower and give you plenty of room to unplug and remove the ignition switch. Just make sure you put it back on right so the rod will be in the right place. so when you turn the key it will engage the switch correctly. A new ignition switch will be cheap and it shouldn't take more than an hour to change it. I think they were recalled for your year, I know mine was, they were at risk to catch on fire or something. so if it hasn't been replaced after the recall it can't hurt.

hope this helps

When i start it i have to turn the key back to where it almost shuts off in order to turn on my heater, and or to use my blinkers. I'm just trying to figure out what new parts i will need, so i can go buy them, and replace them when i'm swapping all the parts to my rebuilt motor and throwing in my dual exhaust.

Could be the switch just has to be adjusted.

you should be able to just loosen the screws and slide the switch forward a little.
