I have an 89 Bronco 2 with a 2.9. It's been running great since I purchased it 3 months ago. A few days ago it was hard to start, and I didn't hear the normal whine of the fuel pump - it finally started and then quit abruptly a few blocks down the road. I immediately assumed fuel pump and rapped on the tank, nothing.. Towed to a dealer and they charged me $90 to tell me there were no faults, good fuel pressure and it started right up and ran most the day with no problems.

Ok, so I pick it up and it quits on the freeway on-ramp, this time shaking the pig and beating the **** out of the tank seemed to work cuz it started and I made it home. Long story short - I have changed out the fuel pump in the tank, and the $12 fuel pump relay. Hey it starts! Test drive - Yep, it quit again!

Is it possible to have a bad ECM from a sloppy relay that was creating a lot of resistance? I ohm'ed out the wire from the fuse to the relay and it look's ok.

I'm at my wits end on this one... Any ideas?

That could be a choke problem according to my Chiltons, maybe a fuel pressure regulator. I would have the fuel pressure checked cold and hot.

I changed my EEC relay out today, so both the fuel pump and EEC relays are new. But it died again. Just for S&G I brought my big rubber mallet and a stick so when it stalled I poked around the top of the tank, wiggled some wires, hit the side of it a few times - it fired up again. I have a feeling there is a bad ground or the plug at the top of the sender unit might have some issues.

I'm thinking this might be a good time to swap for the 4.0 I've been wanting to do :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Just an update of this ongoing problem...

I replaced the TFI ignition module today and had to adjust the timing. It and great didn't quit for a good 2 hours this time, driving down the road it did cut-out for a moment but started right up. I think the TFI was definitely the problem and that hiccup might have been a ground? Im going to check the grounding strap in the back. of the engine.

Did you change the pickup inside the distributor, that sounds just like the problems that FSBs have when the pickup goes bad. It works fine while cold, but cuts out when the engine is hot.

Good luck,

I was thinking about the pickup coil, but I thought it would just run rough and then quit. I thought that about the ignition module too so I might as well replace that too.

I attached a pic of this ground strap on the back of the block that doesn't seem to go anywhere. Near the oil filter on the engine block has a cable direct to the neg post so maybe this cable goes to the frame somewhere.

How difficult is it to change a pick-up coil? Do I have to remove the distributor? My chilton doesn't have much info on that.

Wow, after 3 weeks, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, coil, ignition module, fuel pump and EEC relays... It looks like (knock on wood) the pick-up coil was the problem. Only they didn't have just the pickup coil so I got the distributor for $40 more. I'm driving it to work tomorrow and I have all the tow companies on speed dial now just in case. But so far all my test driving today no hiccups at all. Thank you for the tip Seabronc!

Learning experience for me and I can only justify all the parts to my wife is that it's an $800 truck and I don't have to make a payment.

i have the same prob with my 86 b-2 2.9 . i just had a prob with fuel leakin out the injecter ports. that was sucking air replaced them and the shut off stops but as soon as it heated back up . it still wants to stall at 55mph. the dist. cap and rotor button melted on me going down the road and stalled out.had to replace that. it ran fine after that for two days. then started back gets to temp and shuts down.

replaced parts: map sensor, dist.cap and button x2, fan, fuel filter x2, tfi sensor, eec, fuel injectors, basic tune up, head gasket covers and new gaskets, brake booster and resov. set timing,

after the fuel injectors it has run fine for another 2 days. if any body has any other ideas. these are the things i have tried and had to fix anyways. theres overload in dist. and button that can cause shut off. the fuel injectors were suckin air and that caused shut off. the tfi was not my prob or the map sensor had them checked they were fine. my next step is the termostat and i will update you on that. good luck to all. this seem to be a comon problem with the 2.9 b-2
