I have a 88 B2 EB and the fuel/ engine temp sensor don't function. The fuel gauge partially works. It registers the tank when its full to 3/4 full.

Any ideas on what this can be? And how much to have it fixed at a shop?

The fuel gauge sounds like a bad sender unit, check at http://www.broncograveyard.com. Price varies. You will have to drop the tank to do it. If you are not comfortable with that go to a mechanic you trust and have him give you an estimate.

If the temperature problem is a sender unit, they are cheap. Check the same site. This one is real easy, my 8 year old grandson can do it. Do NOT [-X use Teflon tape on the threads. The threads are designed to seal and tape will prevent the unit from working properly as it needs the ground connection to the intake manifold. Picture of a temperature sender attached

If the problem is actually, (but I doubt it), is a gauge they are pretty pricey and a junk yard would be the best option.

Good luck,

:)>-

Im still looking for the name of that part. The part that registers the temp of the engine.

Ive looked a few times and just cant find it. The sensor does function in part in the summer (prob because the whole engine bay is hot), so im thinking its just loose or missing.

Heres a pic of the engine bay, what area would i be able to find it at? Rather, does it connect to the coolant tank? If that's the case, then i need to install my replacement coolant tank.

I'm not real familiar with the BII engine compartment, but that little blue thing next to the radiator hose looks like it. Is that a wire connected to the top of the device? If so it is most likely the sender unit. Perhaps a close up and a few other pictures that show the intake area.

Good luck,

Yes, the sensor is in the front of the intake next to the radiator hose/thermostat housing. (blue thing with wire as Seabronc said.) Looks like it has teflon tape on it too which may be the problem. However that sensor is like $5 I would replace it. The LAST thing you want a 2.9 engine to do is overheat.

Semi related -- A few years ago I filled up at Shell station and my gas gauge quit working. Quite by accident i heard on the news that Shell, Texaco and a few other companies were delivered bad gas with high sulphur content from a refinery in Lousiana. there was a class action suit, I went to the Shell web site and gave them the location of the station i bought gas from. Shell sent me a check for $500.00 to replace my fuel sending unit and labor !!!! The stations that got the bad gas were from louisiana to Florida along the coast. I think this was in 2004.

I think we are confusing the sensor with the gauge sending unit. Two different parts.

The Temp SENSOR is located on front of manifold by the water outlet next to the heater hose. That is for the computer to adjust fuel for engine temp. (and what is in the picture from autozone link)

the SENDING unit that controls the temp gauge is the one Seabronc and I pointed out which is on the other side of the waterneck/thermostat housing. I was thinking he was worried about temp gauge not working properly which would be the sending unit.

In my post above i incorrectly called it a Sensor when it is a sending unit. my bad.

The issue is that the Gauge in the cab isnt reading the engine temp correctly. When its hot out it registers it partially.

From what your telling me i need to replace the Sending unit, a search on auto zone yielded no results. Am i looking for the wrong item?

EDIT::: This is it correct? http://www.autozone.com/R,3025431/vehicleI...oductDetail.htm

And as for the location, ive read "Under hood, center, front engine area, above water outlet, next to valve cover, mounted on intake manifold"... It should be around the area highlighted in the below picture?.

no that is the fuel pressure regulator (in the black square)

The temp sending unit is in the picture... while looking at the picture, it is between the waterneck (upper radiator hose) and the a/c compressor it has one wire with a black 90 deg rubber connector on top. Directly under the accelerator linkakage... in you picture the sending unit looks blue with black thing on top.

And yes... the new autozone part is the one.

Thanks for the help, but im confused now. The Temperature switch is NOT the blue one correct? It should be somewhere above it though? I though the blue one was the Coolant Temperature Sensor.

And i really appreciate the help.

Yes, the radiator hose is attached to the thermostat housing, which is bolted to the front of manifold with 3 bolts. inside the Thermostat housing is the thermostat.

Keep in mind that these parts (housing, intake manifold) are ALUMINUM and you dont want to overtighten any bolts or you may strip threads. Hard to tell you "how tight is tight" ... just be aware of that fact.
