Hello everyone,

First time post, looking for some solid advice, and any you could send my way will be very appreciated....

I recently purchased a 1988 BII with the automatic trans 2.9lt and push button 4WD.

I was playing a little with the 4WD and the 4WH comes on and functions no problem...

the problem im having is , the 4WL does not come on. When i push the button i hear some clicking like i hear with the 4WH

engaging but then the light does not come on.

I know the four wheel high works and would like to fix the four wheel low.. Where do i begin with trouble shooting..

Thanks in advance!

Matt

i follow the procedure listed on the driver side visor. if memory serves, the transmission must be in N and at a complete stop you then push the 4wl button...

if im not mistaking thats it.

If ive missed something, im all ears.. Thanks so much

Nope your not missing anything. Can't give you advise if I assume you did everything. Most logical is to find out if you are trying to engage it correctly. It can be anything from driver error to an internal tcase problem. You wouldn't believe how many people would try and engage 4lo while moving.

I had the same problems with a 94 Explorer that i used to raise **** in. I had 4high but no 4low. my problem was on the transfer case. do to have a push button select, there is an electric motor mounted on the outside of the transfer case. that is what ingages the 4high and low by turning a post that goes in the transfer case. the electric motor is probly worn out and wont engage all the way. hit up your local junk yard and you'll most likely find one. good look

It could also be the sensor within the shift motor. The sensor is actually some contacts running on a small circular PC board. If you ohm it out that the readings are high, open up the "non repairable" section; clean the contacts and pcb; reassemble to make sure it is tightly clean - so that water and gunk cannot get in under the cover. That should then make things work.
