Hello

I have a 84 xlt bronco (all data is on my signature page)

Truck had a reman motor put in about 3 years ago, runs great EXCEPT

I jhave a realy high idle and rich exhaust, I mean it burns ur eyes.

There are a bunch of vac lines hanging, dont know if thats the prob or just a mis adjusted carb, maybe even a EGR?

This is a great old truck with a perfect body, it will never be a show winner just a realy fun hunting buggy, so it dosent have to go back showroom, I just want it to run right. Anybody got ideas?

Also any help with the pros and cons of removing the AIR pump system and maybe even what you think about just going old school back to a carb without out all the vac controled krap and what that would entail?

Thanks all, Im kinda at a dead end

first off check your vacuum ball valve(might be the wrong name for the part), in one of the valve covers, usually the passanger side one there should be a part that pops in connected to a big vacuum line, make sure that that line is connected to either the intake or a collector of vaccume lines.

if you pull that part out of the valve cover the engine should idle differently, usually it'll run really rough. if it doesn't change then you have a vacuum leak either there or in another line. if there is a noticeable change then your vacuum system is operating within reasonable specs.

check to see about your carb or choke after that and let us know how you make out.

You should just get rid of that emissions crap anyway before it gives you more problems,Unless you live in California.Getting all that out and just having your basic vacume lines will be less things you have to maintain.Anyway those air pumps are known to seiz up anyway. It would clean up your engine area also.

Well, I'd start by cleaning up the vacuum system. DO NOT just indiscreminantly remove vacuum lines. Not all of them are for emissions control. Some are required to give better cold start and run characteristics.

From the pictures it looks like you have an original 2BBL on it. If so, it probably has issues that even a reuild kit won't fix, especially in the vacuum leak area. Most likely it has worn, deteriated, clogged and/or sticking components.

I would recommend a new or remanufactured carb not a rebuilt one or rebuild kit. A remanufactured one has parts replaced that a rebuilt one doesn't.

Also, Steve83 did a great write up on it as referenced in his post. Take time to read it, it will help you understand the vacuum functions better.

Good luck,

:)>-
