It will work, but.

Check to make sure the spring buckets are the same for the front end.

The part I am not sure about, is what parts you will need to change when you put the clutch in. All manuals from 86 on, have hydraulic clutches, if the 84 doesn't, you should get one, if it does, swap it with the transmission.

Before I upgraded my 86 B2, it had an assembly on the top of the clutch pedal arm that I believe was to disconnect the ignition.

You will also need to add a couple wires for the manual shift/transfer case, (put the bulb in the dash to show 4x4 hi-lo). I think the neutral wire from the A4LD can be adapted to, or spliced in for the manual, and the reverse switch for the back up lights can be done the same way.

As you do the swap, you will find things you will need to change and wiring that will need to be deleted or spliced.

Good luck, take your time, it will work.

Any manual transmission from an RBV, (Ranger based vehicle, Ranger, Bronco II, Explorer) up to 1995 and possibly newer.

According to the Chilton's manual, your 84 does have a hydraulic clutch. On the engine side of the firewall, drivers side, you should see a light colored container with a ***** on lid and a hose out the bottom. Follow the hose down the firewall, it should connect to a part that is attached to the firewall on the outside. Now go inside and look under the dash at upper part of the clutch pedal arm, it has a rod attached to it, that is the rod that pushes the piston in the hydraulic cylinder you saw the bottom of in the engine compartment. While you are looking under the dash you may as well figure out how you are going to remove the clutch pedal assembly, you are going to need it, hint, the metal panel under the steering column is removable, some were screwed on, others had plastic twist screws.

Do you have a Chilton's or Haynes manual? If you do not, you should get one, you are going to need it before you are done with is swap. A manual will give you the specifics that will be very hard to explain here.

I screwed up, only a 2.8, 2.9 or 4.0 transmission will work, the inline 4's and the 3.0 have a different bolt pattern.

I wanted to install a M50D-R1 from a 3.0, it has a lower first gear than the one for the 4.0, but the bolt pattern is quite different.
