i just changed out the charging system and i had it running for 30 mins to charge the battery and check the engine electrical system, it ran fine. yesterday i was going to fill the tank up and i made 2 mins down the road and it was stalling backfiring out of the carb. i had a few gallons of gas in the tank. figured that was enough for a couple of miles. i put about 7 gallons of gas in the tank using small fuel tanks. now i crank it, it backfires from the carb, and dies! i can press the gas to the floor and it'll run for a few moments, but it still stalls and all the rest then dies. not sure what it is. any help would be great! thanks

Best guess...

Your timing gear/chain jumped a tooth, or is way sloppy.

My 302 did the same thing...I moved the distrib. & it ran for another day or two. (obvious sign) then quit again.

Upon removal, the (gear) teeth were short & rounded... /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Definently a timing issue. Pull the distributor cap and then the rotor. I was driving my truck across state one time and all of a sudden it started backfiring and died. It would idle fine but when you hit the gas, it would backfire or die. I pulled the rotor and the locating tab on the inside of the rotor had broke off. I actually fixed it with duck tape to get me the rest of the 230 miles back home. Check it out, let us know what you find. Good luck!!!

i know the timing chain is loose. i found some info on the holley carb, i adjusted the idle so know it runs fine. but it still stalls if i try to place in to gear or turn the wheel. it runs at about 800 to 1000 rpms. but it's running extremly rich. but i'll try the distributor. i'll let you guys know.

thanks!

I agree it is a timing problem. However, adjusting the idle mixture doesn't guarantee that the carb is running properly.

Good luck,

:)>-

i didn't get a chance to play with the distributor. the carb is getting replaced. it's running rich still. i got instructions on how to tune it up, but it doesn't match the hooley i got. i found 2 but whats the differance in 570; 670 cfm's. they are both the correct models but the cfms are getting me. plus is there a site to get a full engine wiring diagram. i have a hanyes book on it but several wires are not listed.

thanks!

I had almost that same thing happend to my old 76 high boy. It truned out the be the c-clip for the vacuum advance in the distributor. It was an 18 cent fix. I hope yours is that simple.

well it was 2 problems. the first was the carb. the one that was on there was for off roading and with only the control to adjust curb idle. replaced that with a 570cfm holley. the other was the spark plugs were crossed. it was only firing cylinders 1,3 correctly. sovled that, runs great still doesn't like to go in to gear though. i have a couple of vac. lines open that need capping. let you kow how it goes. thanks!
