I know what you mean, the engine continues to turn over firing on unburnt fuel in the cylinders after the ignition is turned off, my 81 with the 300 did that a bit back in the day.

as my description of the situation explains the cause is a build up of fuel that is left over. sometimes this can be associated with old gas that doesn't com-bust properly leaving the unspent fuel behind.

another cause is if the idle air mix is too rich because of being out of adjustment or being blocked by debris. this can be fixed by cleaning the carb and resetting the idle air ***** to factory adjustment.

and lastly this can be attributed to incorrect timing ( less likely) when the ignition is too ******** and again causes an incomplete burn leaving behind unspent fuel.

See I knew it could have been the ignition being adjusted incorrectly. I didn't know about the old gas or air mix. Although that does make sense because come to think of it it did begin to stop when I was finished adjusting my carburetor.

the best thing to do would be to run some carb cleaner through it and maybe rebuild it because it has been sitting. get some fresh gas through it and have someone put a timing light on it.

my bronco would diesel from time to time and back fire when running, when I replaced the carb the problem went away which means it just needed a rebuild

my brothers Camaro did that after a few months of sitting with next to no fuel in it, the gas went bad and did the same thing, ran like crap and dieseled like crazy. fresh gas and the problem went away.

and lastly I would spend hours playing with the carb on my 429 Thunderbird and when I had the idle mix adjusted out of spec it did the same thing.

things you learn by doing.
