I've been looking around for a good 3G alternator with higher output. Any suggestions on where to buy one would be appreciated. Apart from that, I noticed a 6G alternator out there. What's the difference?

Here's a site that explains all the different "G's"

http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=63

And here's a quick explanation from FSB:

The 6G has better ventilation and larger fans = runs cooler compared to Ford's earlier versions. Cooler running means a more reliable output. The 6G is also supposed to be more stable under load.3Gs are good, but had heat failures when used in extreme apps, such as limos and public service vehicles. The 6G was the fix for these problems.

Comparing the standard non-highout units..

The large case 6G puts out 90ish amps at idle. The large case 3G puts outs 75ish.

The small case 6G puts out 70ish, the small case 3G puts out 60ish.

If you're comparing apples to apples, the 6g is the clear winner.

I'm thinking that Most year full size broncos used the 180* mount?? << If that's right, the large case 6Gs are a hard find for that app, so your choices are the 3G or small case 6G.

The 3G was Fords premium alternator for years even after later designs were released. I have run a 3G for a couple of years now, with no problems. The 3G is a very easy installation and if you get the right model it is pretty much a drop in.

look at the pictures on my superford site link. I believe it is labeled 3G Installation.

Good luck,

Thanks Al. Thanks Fred.

Great pics on all your work Seabronc. Looks like you know your electrical very well! I'm still looking around at alternators. Okay, so now I'm faced with decisions-a-plenty. The fordfuelinjection site shows several alternators including the 3G and 6G...and even a Mitubishi Ambulance (F-350) alternator. I just want one that will give me plenty of amperage for a winch (when I get one). 3G enough?

3G and an Optima Yellow top or two would be more than enough. I have never heard of anyone going over a 3G before thats why I just left a smartass comment. I have heard of people upgrading to an Ambulance alternator also with great results.

I would get a 200A 3G. It comes in various versions from 95 amp to 200+ amp. Caution with buying from Ford Fuel Injection. There have been numerous complaints about his customer service in the past year. I personally purchased stuff from him a couple of years ago and everything went just fine, then last fall I put in an order and he never shipped it. So after 3 months I filed a complaint via PayPal and he finally sent my money back. I think he is having some personal problems plus trouble with suppliers but he refuses to communicate with his customers. My rating of him is 100 for knowledge and -100 for customer service. That still puts him as 0 average. If you look on FSB, it has several posts of the, "Where is Ryan?" type.

Good luck,

:)>-

Seabronc, I'm confused. What does the 3G stand for? I assumed it had something to do with the amperage output, I checked out some of Meisk's links but it showed different amp ratings like you just stated. I just assumed I didn't have a clue what I was looking at so moved on.

Third generation. The alternator in say a 84 is 1G, around 90/91 they introduced the 2G, around 93 the 3G and later 4G, etc. They continued to use the 3G in vehicles that needed a good HD alternator for several years after the 4G came out. Basically you are talking about internal design changes.
