There is nothing wrong with that inline 6 for a trail rig. I have a friend who started out with one in a competition crawler and he was always in the top 10. You need gearing more than you need horse power for a trail rig. If you put 5.88 gears in it, and maybe swap to a different transmission, you don't need to do much else. But a gear change and trans is going to run in the $2-4k range for everything. A good flexible lift is another grand and tires and rims will be right there too. So all in all, you will be looking anywhere from $4-6k for one of the better lifts, 35" tires & rims, regear & a transmission. Throw a locker into each end and bump up another $1500-2k. But in answer your question, you have to change motor mounts, transmission mounts, possibly throttle linkage and other smaller items to do this swap. If you want a crawler, obviously you aren't worried about high speeds, so I would stick with the I-6 and just do the gears, trans & put lockers into it. Anyone who tells you that a good crawler has to have a V8 in it don't know what they are talking about.

The I-6 motor will also make a fairly good amount of torque as well, when built right.

I don't know what will bolt up. Mine has a 302 w/NP435 tranny, so I never had to try and swap out. What you should do is call BC Broncos and ask them what is the best tranny to go behind the I-6.

You can bolt up a c-4 auto w/ a minimal amount of effort as far as auto's go. As far as manuals; I feel theres more options, but they all take some work to make fit properly. Im planning on putting in a ZF tranny in mine, it's a 5 speed w/ a granny low, but iv'e heard of Np435 fitting as well. Check out FordSix.com tons of info for you to look through inregards to transmission and performance upgrades. If your curious about inline six parts go to classicinlines.com
