Hello all,

I am new to the Bronco world. Just bought an 86' Bronco with no motor for 200.00. Everything is there except for the block and heads. I am picking up a 302 out of a 90' stang. The Bronco had a 302 in it originally. Is there anything I will need to change or should the stang motor bolt right up? Maybe the intakes are different or something. Also. I live in California, any smog issues? Thanks for any help you guys might have.

The upper intake is the only difference. Oh wait, I think the 86's still had v-belt pullies. You will have to customize accordingly, decide if you want to swap over to serpentine or retain your v-belt set-up. Both will require a little research for compatiblity and availability. the easiest in my opinionation would be to retain the v-belt set-up. Then you wont have to worry about powersteering pump and alternator issues. Keep in mind though, the serpentine water pump spins in the opposite direction of the v-belt, so you will need a new water pump and you will need the tin plate from the '90 waterpump and put it on the '86 cause the holes are in different places.

The mustang 5.0 has a different firing order, different heads and other good stuff. I would get high performance pistons, crankshaft, camshaft, heads, intake and make it as tough as you can.

I do believe you will have to change the oil pan and oil pump pickup. The Bronco pan has the sump in the back. Also, from what I understand, California has some pretty strict requirements about smog equipment. I believe you will have to have whatever was originally on the truck or better.

Good luck,

:)>-

Theres a couple things I can think of , You will have to use the flywheel from the 90 motor or make sure the other one has the 50oz weight on it . The 90 motor will have the TFI ignition and the 86 would have had a duraspark . If your not going EFI you will have to use the duraspark . Now you cant just throw that duraspark distributor in that 90 motor ( being that its a roller cam motor ) for 2 reasons one the shaft is a bit longer than a non roller motor therfore they use a shorter oil pump drive and two the roller cam is billet steel and will eat the cast gear right off that duraspark distributor so you must change the gears around and change the oil pump drive if you decide to go that way . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

the Bronco originally had a 302 with EFI. all the wiring and everything is there. Was it a duraspark set up in 86'?

No, I just sold a '90 302 out of my Bronco to a friend with an '86 Bronco. It was a direct bolt in swap aside from what I stated earlier. The wiring is different so since you have the old stuff I'd definately use the wiring that came with the Bronco. Any misc parts that you may have for the Bronco should be used on the new engine to make for a simple swap.
