('72, 4WD, 302) I'm working on my second '72 bronco. This one will be my daily driver. Because the transfer case is shot and it leaks fluid everywhere. I want to remove it and convert the 4WD to 2WD. Freeing up a little horse power and increase my mpg a bit. Has anyone have any tips on doing that. Ya, I could have bought a 2WD to start off with but what

".....Freeing up a little horsepower and increase my mpg a bit."

And this will be the result because why...?

IMHO

If it's fun you want...pull thr trannie/transf. down & freshen up.

This will give you better results....& cost "less"

BUT..., Go for it..!

Put your engineering skills to work & design/build a rear motor mount as this function is now handled by--the transfer-case---- Pull trannie for this.

Call advanced adaptors as they may have an adaptor for your trannie to mount an output shaft & yoke. (to hook new dr. shaft to) Prob. looking at $1000-$1500 if your careful. $-)

"I like to make thing as complicated as possible."

It appears you have met/exceeded your expectations. @-)

"Has anyone have any tips..."

Buy a Pinto...? they get 25 MPG...! >

BullyBob has just about said it all  . You are looking for more expense and headaches than you can probably stand, get a 200 capsule bottle of Excedrin and go at it :-& . Some people have all the fun b-( . You could have it rebuilt for less than the conversion cost and if you rebuild it yourself it will solidify the bond between you and your machine :D/ .

Good luck,

:)>-

Ya'll have given me a lot to think about. Maybe a rebuild will be the way to go because I know there will be plenty of headaches on this rust bucket.

Well when I mean a bit, I mean a little ity bitty bit... a whopping 2 to 3%

I prefer Advil over Excedrin @-)

Thanks for the advise

-----  rolling on the floor   ------

You got me GOOD..! I'll tell ya. "Hats off" to ya.... :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

In fact, I'm going out, right now, & remove my gas tank......that will save a lot of weight & really improve my mileage.

And.., I'll remove my steering shaft as well.....it's a "weak-link" as the U-joints are old.

Tks. for the insite...keep-m-comn....!

I saw an article about a guy who converted an early bronco into a 2 wheel drive truck. The owner swapped out the front rear for an independent setup. He even lowered the bronco a tad. The truck looked good for what it was. I myself would not consider doing a swap like this. I enjoy the four wheel drive capabilities of the rig. Larger engines normally do not produce fantastic fuel milage. Sure pulling out a rear and a transfer case would save some weight. Could always put stock tires on, if not already installed. Stock carb back on if not installed. What sort of milage are you looking to produce. Early Broncos are not the most aerodynamic vehicles. A rebuilt stock transfer cases are not super expensive.

Every litter bit counts :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> . 2% took me from 10 MPG to 12 MPG. If you can afford the cost of conversion, "It's your truck".

Just a side note guys. I might remind you that fighting in the forum can get your suspended, so lets stop the personality stuff, OK.

Good luck,

:)>-

If your going to build a two wheel drive bronco do it right and take some ideas off of Parnelli Jones's Big Oly bronco which won the baja 1000 many times and other numerus off-road races. Its a twin I-Beam design and your radius arm mounts are alredy there all you have to do is fab up some I-Beam pivots and buy a drag link for a two wheel drive truck and find a tail shaft housing for a two wheel drive truck with a 303 trans
