Pulled the motor out of my 84 Bronco this weekend, it had a loud knock in the bottom end. Upon removing the oil pan, found several metal shards and a few bigger chunks. Plus, the oil looks like chocolate milk, very thick and sludgey. :((

It's a NAPA longblock from 2001 with only about 20K miles. Didn't last very long, huh?

Looking for any suggestions on a replacement motor, as this one is beyond hope, since it prolly has a cracked block allowing coolant into the oil along with one or more busted main or rod bearings.

It was like 12 mos/24K miles, so it's long past that time. You would expect more miles out of it, but many folks that I taked to laughed at the NAPA motors offered a few years ago. The prev. owner paid $1700 for the longblock kit in July, 2001. And the owner of the store it was purchased from couldn't/wouldn't tell me anything about the motor, like what brand of parts were in it or any specs. Needless to say, I won't be going back to NAPA for another motor

If you are looking for a good value, City Motor Supply in Dallas has a premium long block for like $880.00, check out their website www.citymotorsupply.com for info. I have used them for years, have had several buddies get good strong motors from there, that's where I got the heads for my current build.

Found the problem: a bent connecting rod on one piston, causing it to contact a lobe on the crankshaft. Weird!!!

That sucks Justshootme if your crank isnt hurt I can hook ya up with a good rod . and maybe even the correct oversize piston . If it didnt totally destroy anything else you may just want to rebuild it yourself that way you know what you have . Ebay is a wonderful place and you can find name brand stuff there cheap search out mad dog racing there and they can set you up with a package deal on all the parts you need name brand too , I think the guy I dealt with was Don . They shipped fast and prices beat summit and jegs for the same stuff . If you are going to have the heads redone I would recomend finding a set from an 86 ** 5.0 the combustion chambers are very nice mine runs great all you have to do is drill the head bolt holes from 7/16 ( 302 ) to 1/2 ( 351 ) and your all set . Also if you do find a set of those heads you can get one peice stainless steel valves made by Ferra for about $130 maybe less theres some on there right now for $89 for an entire set intake and exhaust . You could also do this way cheaper than a stock crate motor :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SB-FORD-351...1QQcmdZViewItem

Heres some pistons not the desired top though http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SEALED-POWE...1QQcmdZViewItem

These ones are very nice pistons but youd have to use a big chamber head and watch the valve lift . http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-WISECO-...1QQcmdZViewItem

did u go though a puddle or something like that

i have seen that on a few cars i've worked on.. i had one that was still running perfectly fine i just had a slight knock come to find out the #2 cylinder rod was bent in a way that the pistion was hitting the counter weight on the crankshaft :)) .

maybe u can find a 351 or a bigblock on ebay to shove in your truck

goodluck :)>-

Thanks, Blade, I'll look at the stuff from ebay.

My Dad and I tore down the rest of the motor this weekend, with help from Brian-n-TX and his son. Thanks dudes!!!

Both piston rods on the back/rear two cylinders were bent, like they had seized or froze up. Most of the cylinders have some patches of rust, but all of the rod bearings were badly worn down and scored. Due to the probability of a cracked block and just the cost of having the block cleaned and MagnaFlux'd, We figured the best route would be another short block kit, with quality components - not the junk that NAPA had in their engine. I can have the heads worked over and checked out for little cost.

Keep those links to engine suppliers coming, and I'll check them out. JSM84

Not a big fan of the idea of REMAN engines---but I have had tons of luck with a Jasper engine. At least 3 years ago I picked up a 302 for my 1989 Mustang GT and it purrs---and ROARS. They actually put different stuff in the motors depending on application but mine came with tons of goodies--forged stuff and crome valve stems etc. I did alot of research before buying. It was around $1,700 for a longblock from oil pan on up delivered right to my driveway. Check-em out. Almost forgot-- 75,000ml warranty even if self-installed and thier tech support was great with question.

Yes, I've heard only positive feedback on Jasper engines, and did check with them. I could get a complete engine for $1954.00, not a bad price.

I found something a little better for my needs, though. Thanks for all of the replies!
