My 69 bronco has a 302 engine that has had timing problems and has run strong but spuddered. I disassembled the distributor and pulled out the distributor shaft, which has an open end at the shaft bottom and a gear along the shaft. In this process the rod that connects below fell into the oil pan. I retreived the shaft and noticed that its bent. Is the rod made with this bend or is this what could have been causing the timing problem????? The bend is about 15 degrees and I cannot get it back ito place to reassemble the distributor flush to the engine itself?? I also cannot see how the shaft could possibly spin with this bend in it........? Any input is appreciated, Thanks.

If you are talking about the hexagonally shaped rod that fits into the bottom of your distributor shaft, no, it is not supposed to have a bend in it. That same shaft will not affect your timing in any way.

The timing is related to the gear on the distributor shaft and the drive gear for it on the camshaft.

You were lucky to have noticed the shaft falling into your oil pan, that is the oil pump drive, without it, if you started your engine you would have starved the engine of oil, consequently damaging the engine.

Please do your self a favor and purchase a service manual, they are invaluable when you are working on things for the first and even sometimes the tenth or fifteenth time! (It will also save you money in the future when performing your own repairs)

Can you see any scratches or signs that this oil pump dr. shaft was actually functioning in this condition?

There would be obvious distortion on the bottom of the dist. "hex. hole" & both ends of the shaft...!!

Is there any way you bent it trying to recover it...?

---how weird--

No not really, I put a new shaft and got it fixed in place, but now the bronco doesn't start, what should i do first to get the timing right????

B-u-y...a...m-a-n-u-a-l ...! ....... :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> seriously..., it will be your best friend..!

(doesn't mean you can't find answers here as well.) /><' />

1) #1 cyl. at TDC. --- compression stroke.

2) check timing mark to be at
3) set dizzy so that rotor points to # 1 button on dizzy cap.

4) turn key to "on" position...check for 6v on the + side of coil.

5) start eng.

6) adj. dizzy to desired adv. (prob. 4-6 deg. adv.)

7) go wheel'n
