1st time with rear quarter panels

hey yall, greetings from southern georgia, where its now 73 degrees outside.

I got a 96 Eb, and Im starting to get the standard rust outs, rear quarters on both sides around the wheel-wells and the rear tail-gate. Im looking at the replacements from broncograveyard, and Im wondering am I gona be able to do this my self? I have very little bodywork experience, and the local shop wants over 1000$ just to patch up the area. I want to go with all new metal though. I can see Im gona have to grind off the welds and then retack in the new panels. Is this pretty rough, or can I handle this on my limited experience?

It's a rough job. I give it a "4" on a scale of 1 to 5. You can do it if you can weld thin sheetmetal and have some experience with body work.

I think I'll be looking for an old body repair guy. I got the same issues. Wheel wells and tailgate.

Nice job, that is basically how I did mine, except I did fix not replace the inner wheel wells and built splash guards, to replace the sucky Ford ones, from 18 wheeler mud flaps. The well is completely sealed and doesn't let the mud and junk go up into the door post area and rear quarter panel area.

My openion is, if you can do wood working you can do body work. Just be sure to cut out all old rust, or it will come back to haunt you :ph34r: .

Welcome, MNSAPP and thanks for the detailed write up on how to install patch panels. Your truck is beautiful, I love the color scheme.

My only question/concern about the method you described, is having the overlap of the patch panel inside the quarter. Please correct me if I'm wrong or if I'm missing something, but it seems this will create an edge/gutter type of thing inside the quarter where the two panels meet which can collect dirt and water and cause more problems quickly, especially once you've cut away the inner fender well, which will allow water in as well as out.

For this reason, I always make a ****** on the quarter panel and lay the patch panel into it. This creates kind of a drip edge inside the quarter where the panels meet and keeps debris out of the seam.

I finally put paint on my truck a couple days ago, it had been raining for a week where I live and eased up just enough for me to shoot it.

sorry it has taken me so ling to reply

i am sorry i have done the inside in a few different ways but i found on the bronco i did was put some seam sealer on the edge on the inside and then i under coated the **** out of it.yes you are right you have to do something or you will have bigger problems likw the ruast will come back.

i plan on useing that write up and putting some pictures with it i took a bunch when i did my bronco, and i should have the bronco back from the shop this weekend he has had it for a month now.

I figured I might as well ask, I know I can't do them myself and the body shops around here want $1700 on average to fix them!!!

I wish I could, but don't know if she will make it that far. Knock on wood, the mechanicals have been outstanding on a $800 truck, but don't know if I should push it.... LOL
