1990 Eddie Bauer 4X4 Bronco 5.8, E40D,Engine code H,Axle H9 Springs BZ.Front ratio tag top line reads 3 54 E9TA MA bottom line reads 610 335-2 LS. Rear ratio tag is gone! Do I have a Ford 8.8 rear end? How do I read the ratio tag for gears? What differential years can I use? I know it has to be the same gear ratio. My differential has the sensor on top. I had the rear-end rebuilt 45,000 miles ago but it's now doing the same thing as it did before. I have 33'tires.Any suggestions would be of help. THANK TOU!

That front ratio is a 3:54 so your back is 3:55 you undoubtably have a ford 8.8 in the rear and you can use any gear ratio you want back there without a carrier change . The front is a dana 44 high pinion reverse cut gear unfortunately there are 3 different carriers for this axle the lowest ratio you can go with your current carrier is 3:73 then theres a carrier for 3:92 and up and I dont remember where the other starts . What is the problem your having with your axle now ? :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

The 3 54 is the gear ratio E9TA MA is the basic Ford part number, 610 335-2 is the Dana part number, and the LS in the bottom line indicates that it is a Limited slip differential. The H9 axle code incicates that the rear axle, if original, is a Ford 8.8 Limited Slip 3.55 gear ratio.

The Ford limited slip differential, Traction Lock Limited-Slip, functions on clutch plates, so you may be experiencing wear and need to replace them. I assume that is what you had done 45,000 miles ago.

Good luck,

:)>-

LISA, YOUR 1990 Bronco came from the factory with the Ford 8.8" rear axle. If it has a cover plate bolted on the back side, it is an 8.8" The axle code "H9" refers to a limited slip-equipped rear axle ONLY, with a gear ratio of 3.55:1.

The front axle is open, or not L/S equipped. The code would be "H92" and the tag would read" 3L54 E9TA ..."

Can you be more specific about the problem you're having??? Your 1990 rear axle has the RABS only (rear anti-lock brakes) with the speed sensor on the transfer case, so a 1987-1992 Ford 8.8" should be similar. THe 93-up have the speed sensor (VSS) in the rear axle instead of the transfer case.
