I have a 1990 Full Size Bronco with an original 302 motor.  it has about 146,000 miles.  I just replaced the tranny, and had some of the engine gaskets replaced.  I found out it was leaking oil again, and now am left with a decision.  Do i rebuild the 302 or replace?  Here are my questions-

If i replace the 302-

1.) What used engines fit right in?  Do Mustang 302's?  If so, what about H.O. 302's?  Any year specific?  Is there anything to look for?

2.) If I go crate, what is the least expensive, best option?  I do not want to have to replace anything else, just the engine.

Thank you all for your help!

Kevin

Hey Kevin,

Welcome,

A 302 0r 351 from the same year or close should fit with little or no modification. BUT...remember you are still dealing with a 20+ year old motor.  You could end up with leaks and little problems.

A crate motor replacement is a better guarantee, but harder on the wallet.  146K  really isn't a lot for a motor any more.  I would find the oil leak and repair that. It would be the least expensive path. Or pull your 302 and rebuild it.

Regarding the Mustang motors the blocks should fit but some changes may be needed with ancillary systems and manifolds.

Good luck

I loved my 302 right till one of the cylinders dided.

1.) What used engines fit right in?  302s and 351s

Do Mustang 302's?  Just use the Bronco intake.

If so, what about H.O. 302's? They fit but take extra work to install (if EFI)

Any year specific? What ever year engine you install you have to have matching componets. i.e. Computer (if EFI)

Honestly, I'm gunna quote Ron, replace it with a create engine or have your engine remanufactured. But at only 146k I'd fix the leak.

yo Kevin,

I agree to fix the leak; is oil pan rusted and leaking?
