Just bought what I considered to be a great shape older bronco. Going back to college, reducing debt...Anyhow, bought it off a guy whos mother drove it since 90'. One owner, well kept, ZERO rust, new transmisssion ($1,800), new tires, interior practically mint, (minus right door rest foam has detiorated, and door lock doesnt catch). The fuel meter is not acurrate, its responding just not acurrate. Maybe the sensor/relay? They used it to pull their boat, thats why the new tranny was essential. Paid $3000 for it, has 5.0L, auto, 4-wheel is fine. Needs the tailgate weather strip replanced...minor age appropriate repairs...Curious if there are typical problems I should be aware of? Love the truck and will definelty be a project once I finish school. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. BTW, cool site here...lots of great information.

If this is your first time here, welcome to the Zone, let's see some pictures.

The two most common complaints in this forum arerobably:

1. The rear window won't go up or down, easy fix takes a little trouble shooting.

2. 4x4 is not engaging with automatic hubs. Usually solved by converting to manual hubs, but could have other less common causes.

Will get pics soon..

1. It has all new power window motors, front and tailgate.

2) Has lockouts...

The fuel gage isnt accurate...is moving, but not accurate. Shows up 1/4 when full and has a variation of +1/4-3/8 when moving. Is it the sensor?

Most likely is the sender unit located in the tank. You can get a new sender from Jeffs bronco Graveyard, LMC Truck,or an auto parts store.

Good luck,

I see the sending unit is $75, and fuel pump is $225, I assume they need to be purchased seperately, or does the pump come as a combo? (Jeffs Bronco Graveyard). I may as well replace both once I drop the tank...

Not sure what you were looking at, but the 1990 sender is expensive and includes the pump, that is why it is so expensive. 90 and up have an internal high pressure pump. 88 - 89 have an internal low pressure pump with an external high pressure pump. You can call Jeff's at248-437- 5060 between 8am and 5pm Central Standard time. The order department assist you to make sure you are ordering the right part/s.

Good luck,

Yah, that is confusing, give them a call. They are all sending units and I think there may be a labeling error. They wil be able to clear it up. They may be allowing you to buy the sender or pump as seperate items if that is all you need.

After having gone back and looking at them, I'm 99.99% sure that they are selling a combined unit $300.00 or you can buy the components seprately for $75.00 and $225.00. Either way you get the same thing.

Yeah, looks like one can purchase the combo or seperate. maybe the best thing to do is go ahead and put the combo in while the tank is down.....I am selling my 02' toyota b/c I am going back to school ..big career change...and I bought it straight out, but now the ol' high school is coming out in me and I want to make it sharp!!

When I pull the tank I am going to give the under carriage a good scrubbing...any anti-rust coating that you recommend??

Congrats on your Bronco purchase!!! Seems like you got a good deal from your description. The fuel gauge problem is most likely the in-tank sending unit, and alot of folks live with it due to the high cost of the fix. If you decide to repair it, it's not difficult. Be sure to drain the tank or siphon as much gas as you can to make it lighter.Disconnect the filler neck screws and the fuel lines. The empty tank weighs about 30 lbs., so if you have a floor jack or tranny jack it helps to control the tank while you remove everything. Check for any rust where the tank contacts the frame, too. You can use POR-15 or similar type rust inhibitors to clean up the tank and frame area. I used "Restore" from NAPA, $11/quart.

Yeah..all is well so far..Had to buy a battery. I thought if I drop the tank, might as well coat everything to give extra protection til in a few years I really go to work. Any suggestions where to get weather stripping...seems a little expensive.

migh twant to lookat the front part of the 4wd. if it was used for towing then it's likely that the joints are stiff like mine were. the first time i put the hammer down in 4low, i snapped a shaft joint, and an axle joint. lack of use can be a problem when you really need it.

You can find new weatherstripping at Jeff's Bronco Graveyard, Auto Krafters, LMC Truck or Natl' Parts Depot. Some items are rather expensive, like door seals. You might luck out and find some good used ones in a salvage yard, too. Most of the years from 80-91 will interchange items like this as well. I used the door seals from my 88 parts Bronco on my 84, along with the taillights, sun visors, and some other parts.

The stripping on the door seems to stop 3/4 at the top..and nothing running vertical along the inside of the door??? Doesnt look like it was there before. I checked the Bronco graveyard...I will continue the search..the main repairs now seem to be the tailgate. thanks,
