The easiest way to tell is to jumper the motor leads using a 12V battery or a 12 to 14.4 volt cordless drill battery. Open the access panel and find the motor leads running along the bottom edge of the panel. If that makes it work, you have a connection problem. Before doing that, try pushing in on the driver side of the door while operating the tail gate switch, sometimes it is just that you need to adjust the striker.

Good luck,

Sounds like someone ripped the wiring out. The motor leads are along the bottom edge of the access panel. if you slide your hand along the leads you should find a connector you can take apart to jumper the motor or just pierce the leads. Switching the polarity on the leads will change the direction of the motor. Check in the bottom under the switch to see if the missing switch hardware is is there. The switch hardware should be attached to leads near the key tumbler position.

Tail gate motor circuit diagram attached.
