My son recently got a 1990 Bronco II for free and when we brought it home, after a thourough check of all fluids, belts and hoses, we started it up (with a little help from some starting fluid). The engine would run smooth as silk then just die. I thought that it was probably out of gas so after the required draining of the lawnmower gas can and going to the local stop-and-rob for 5 more gallons, a little more starting fluid, it again ran like a champ. After about 1 to 1 1/2 minutes, it wouldn't do anything but idle. If you gave it any gas, it sputtered and died and would not crank back up without the starting fluid. I stopped with the starting fluid because the temp was coming up and I didnt want to ruin the engine before he ever got it going. It has been sitting for about 3 years so I imagine that the gas tank needs to be cleaned. Also where is the fuel pump(s) located on the little bronco?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It is a 1990 Ford Bronco II 2WD with a 5 speed. It has a 2.9 EFI engine. Let me know what you think... Thanks BK.

One pump in the tank.

Consider replacing the fuel filter too which is under the truck driver's side frame rail.

Thanks for the reply BroncoJoe19. I'll try those. I am not looking forward to taking the gas tank off, but if I have to, I am going to do all the maintenance on it all at one time. Any suggestions as to how to "clean" any rust or trash out of the tank before I replace the pump? Thanks again, BK.

I just bought a Bronco II with only 15k miles on it. It had been parked since 1994 when the reverse gear originally broke. After sitting for 14 years...the pump in the tank was severely rusted and the rubber hoses in the tank had deteriorated. I had to replace the regulator, fuel sender, tank, and pump. I would change the filter on yours and then check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail on the engine. You could have a bad regulator or pump if your pressure isn't right.
