Ok so I just picked up a 1986 bronco, first thing I did is put new plugs, new batt, new alternator ( the old one was shot), new belts, changed the oil and checked all the fluid levels. I took it out after this and it ran great the next day it also ran great, untill that night we took it out about a 20 or 30 min drive. For no reason it just died and would not even try to turn over, after hooking it to a buddies bronc we finally got it to turn over but once we removed the spark plug wire we saw it wasnt getting any spark. So we just left it for about an hour or two and on our way out figured we would give it one more shot before we went home, and she fired right up. We almost got all the way home and when I stoped at a stop sign it just died. So I need some help, someone told me my alternator belts were to loose and wernt charging the batterie and thats what happend. Another person said it was my coil, or ignition module. I tryed starting it this afternoon and it just barely even tryed then the batt just gave up. Please help

My first thought was to check the fuel filter... IE change it. But when you said that you didn't have any spark, one certainly has to look at the ignition system. One item that somewhat often fails is the pickup coil inside the distributor. I think that is what yardape was referring to. I am not certain because mine is a '90.

Your post is unclear, in that you seem to state "we finally got it to turn over but once we removed the spark plug wire we saw it wasnt getting any spark". Since it can't run without spark, it would be helpful if you could get a little more info. An erratic spark, it could be due to the pick up coil, a loose connection at the igntion coil, a bad ground within the dist cap, a dirty cap (on the inside) a corroded rotor.

If ti was only that one wire... it could be a bad wire.

EFI Module on the distributor is the most common problem with what your are explaining. The reason for the on again off again is the module heats up and looses the continuity. --Vince

it removes from the distributor with a few torx bits(i think, its been awhile). first place id check also. dont forget to check the cap/rotor button either. Its unlikely but possible that with heat the gap between them was too large to produce a nice spark. like i said unlikely but its only two philips head screws to check it out.

good luck
