1978-79 CARB OPTIONS

does anyone know if ford offered a 4 barrel option on the 78-79 broncos? if so how can i prove it to my local smog shop? holly has an emissions legal replacement listed for the 351, 400m. it has all the emission hook ups including the bowl vent. it's only legal for vehicles that came equiped with a four barrel, or had the option of one.

Checked the inter-web sources I usually use for Bronco research.

The only mention I found about Ford offering a 4bbl states it didn't occur until 1984. Most of the sites i checked stated that the 78 and 79 both came stock with the 2bbl. Here's the website that mentions Ford making a "High Output" engine in 1984 and adding the 4bbl Holley; hope it helps:

ford, i think offered the 4bbl on the bronco 351HO in early or mid 80's, i think it came on the 460 in the pickups in 73-79 models.

My 78/79 shop manuals (the actual Ford manuals, not Chilton's or Haynes) show a 4bbl carb as an option for the 460

I'm trying to put my hands on the manuals now to ck on a 4bbl application for the 351M/400 but having just moved I'm not for sure where they are at the moment.

I suppose you'd always have the option of just swapping the 4bbl on right after the smog ck but I'm assuming you need a good carb to *pass* the inspection in the first place which is why you're looking at the Holley.

I'll try to find the manuals tomorrow & get you a more definitive answer.

thanks guys. i came up with the same info. i guess if i want a four i'll have to swap in a 460. only thing is i'm running out of time to smog this thing and can't find a good 2 barrel.
