Hello Friends,

Here is my saga, strange but true.

Dragged my "new" 84 4 speed 351 rusty as heck plow truck home knowing it had no spark when I bought it. I have some 80's "Es" and "Fs" that I have made spark with so, how hard could it be.

At some point the original duraspark was chucked and someone put in a latter distributor with Module attached (looks like my 87 f 150). No spark, pickup tests bad, sometime voltage to the coil sometime not.

This is a VERY rusty plow truck and all I want is dependability.

So I decided to go with a points setup

found them both rebuilt stock and aftermarket

the $475 plow truck seemed to rate the most economical option, rebuilt stock $40 autozone.

Problem is the shaft is 1/2 inch too short bellow the gear.

Truck is a "g" code motor which I think translates to a windsor 2 barrel

My electronic dist from the ****** to the top of the gear is 3.5 the gear is another .5 and the end of shaft is 1.5 ... overall length roughly 5.5 Autozone stocker is 5.0 plus a little.

From the top of oil pump drive shaft to the ****** that the dist sits on in the block is 4 9/16, however the shaft tappers so the 6 sided "meat" is about 4 3/4 from the ******,

Doing the math means that if I run a short shaft then I will only have about 1/4 inch overlap. Call me crazy but I expect that some -30 degree morning the molasses in the oil pump will protest to the point of shaft end failure.

I looked at oil pump drive shafts online and to the best of my knowledge there is only 1 length.

help, snows on the way!

John

yo John,

re; Truck is a "g" code motor which I think translates to a windsor 2 barrel"

That is correct; 351W 2 barrel Carb

My electronic dist from the ****** to the top of the gear is 3.5 the gear is another .5 and the end of shaft is 1.5 ... overall length roughly 5.5 Autozone stocker is 5.0 plus a little.

Check these dimensions instead; ALL 351W have 5/16" shaft to run the oil pump

2008 Ford performance parts book

the figure is 4.031" Min- 4.038" Max. The end play should be .024"-.035".

from Mounting surface to the ****** face on the bottom of the gear

Read insructions there too; such as,

After STEP 7, install distributor assembly in the block you are using. Timing chain set and camshaft must be removed.

With the aluminum distributor housing fully seated against the block, verify that the distributor gear can be lifted off the

support in the block at least .005”. Next, pull the distributor gear down against the support in the block and hold it there.

Pull up on the aluminum distributor housing and verify you can lift it up at least .005” while holding the gear against the

support in the block. This procedure will confirm that the gear is not being forced down against the support and not being

held up off the support in the block. Then, continue with STEP 8.

That is da TFI module mounted on the distr.'s side.

The Carb may be a feedback type Carb of the 2100 Ford
