CAI advice

[Bronco Noob]

Hey guys, this is my first time starting a topic, so here it goes. :blush:/> I was doing some research on CAI and wanted to get a K&N; but, they are extremely over priced for me. I was looking on Ebay the other day and found a CAI that I have never heard of before. The brand is Insys-USA. Does anybody know or have one of these puppies? How do they sound? Do they help with HP at all? Here is the link to the one I was looking at...

ive never even heard of that brand, and the cold air intake systems really dont give enough benifit to justify the price, i have a buddy that paid 300 for the k & n kit and there is almost no difference between our trucks and i only paid 20 for a spectre re useable filter.

As 90 advised and I agree because Ford has a good cold air sys in-place already, but upgrade filter

Thanks 90bronco86 for the input, much appreciated! So, miesk5 if i am reading that correctly http://www.performanceunlimited.com/projectmpg/aircleaner.html says that the K&N CAI air filter was the only thing replaced and it gave the best results? And you are saying that I should wrap my tubes in insulation; and sorry, I have to riddle your guys' brain, I don't know anyone personally who knows this much about broncos />/>

Also, doesn't an after market CAI "let the truck breath better" by opening up that tiny hole so the the air can get sucked in faster?

Hey Noob,

CAIs are by theory suposed to increase horsepower 2 ways.

First, they are supposed to allow the engine to "breathe" more. This they do very well. Problem is that the advantage is realized at Wide Open Throttle. Unless you run your truck at the drag strip, you won't notice much benefit.

Second , as the name implies the intake is supposed to draw in cold air. (colder air is denser...denser air = more air in the combustion chamber....more air ...more BOOM= more power.)

This they do poorly. Many of the products are actually drawing in underhood air that is warmer than that outside of the vehicle.

As M5 suggested, replace the stock air filter with a good high flow unit. Then insulate the airbox and the supply ducting to keep the engine heat from transfering.

Doing this you should notice some better power. Nothing that will make the Bronc pound the earth, but it should be something you notice.

I have attached a pic of my home made insulated airbox. I had just the K&N filter and the original box was discarded by the P.O. When I built the insulated box and ductwork to draw in outside cold air i noticed more power and a little better gas mileage.

Thanks mate, I was wondering how/why CAI were recommended! On a side note, you also recommend insulating the tubes with insulation?

Hey Noob,

Yes, I insulated the intake tubes from the front of the grill to the airbox. It prevents the transfer of underhood engine heat to the air before the box.

now my truck is missing the part of the air box that goes from the grill to the airbox its self, would this make a big difference in power n gas mileage?

YES IT WOULD!....you are drawing in hot air from under the hood, not cooler outside air.
