Hi Oregon, Welcome...,

Do fill in your info pages as you see at the bottom of my post & to the left....this eliminates the guess-work.

As of now, it's a bit unclear...do you have the floor shifter conversion.? This makes it easier to inspect.

Is the shifter loose/sloppy..? Exactly what does "binds-up" mean..? "Pops out" underway or won't stay in gear at rest..? Did this just start, or is it a long time prob..?

Don't be stingy with info....no one will make fun here & the crystal ball is a bit dusty.. :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

(Thanks for the heads up)Alrigh i'll try this again. 70 bronco, 302, dana 20 T-shift, 3 on the tree . just got the bronco last summer and towed it home after a little carb work it was up and running. used the 4 wheel drive last winter and in 4 high going 25-30mph on snow it would pop the t-case into neutral. tried 4 low and went alrigh but the transfer case would howl and could not get it out of 4low or unlock the hubs i had to kinda pop the clutch till it would come out. i checked the front and rear gear ratio (3.54/3.50) first, then i put new t shift bushing in because the handle was pretty sloppy. this kept it from popping all the way into neutral but it still bangs and tries.this all usually happens in 2nd&3rd gear.

I dont know about the t trans case I have a J trans case but with both dana 20s and a three speed and a four speed that I have had I and you might have too wiggle the tires and gears a little too get the tranfer case too engage and unengage I know on concrete with the big tires turned it all binds up a pinch and some rockin of the tires and a dry shift or two gets me re or un engaged on the transfercase

I have twin sticks now and they still get sticky too!

BBB

I remeber know the two inch body lift I had once made the sheet metal hit the shifter(keeping it from full insertion) check that as well

Gotcha..!!

However.., poping fr. 4 high., into neutral...it would have to go thru 2 high, first, then into neutral....?

Are we on the same page here..?

The shifter goes from all the way forward... 4W-low, (then back to) neutral, (back)2W-HI, (all the back)4W-HI

Thinking maybe you're meaning the trannie pops into neutral as I don't think this (4hi to neutral) is possible.

As to sticking in 4low... mine does this as well...but., it hasn't bothered me enough to do anything but go fr. forward to reverse a time or two...then it comes out of 4low.

Same for the hubs.. after backing up, they will unlock easier.

Squeeky clean & well greased hubs help this hub sticking.

The T-case does howl in 4low-3rd gear...this is normal.

Thanks for the replies. It was jumping from 4high through 2 high to neutral but then when i put the new t-shift bushing in it just tries to jump out of 4 high now. Probably because the shifter locks in place better. This has not happened in 1st gear though. As for the noise in 4low it is probably alright like you said. There is also nothing interfering with the shifter.

With a floor shifter installed (& then of course with the cover removed)..., there's more room to view the actual shift rails.

On the side of ea. shift rail, there's a bolt that applies pressure for a spring & ball that sets in an "indent"....that's what holds it in gear.

I think you can see them fr. underneath, but, doubt you can get your hands up to them.

Not saying that's the prob. but it is a poss. the spring or ball is the culprit.
