Hey all. Thinking bout upgrading to a bigger alt. My bronco has the 95Amp, and with the fog lights, old age, shes just not getting the job done.

Now im thinking i want to do the 3G alt swap. But i need to get some information straightened up and everything in my mind cleared up. Ive seen many threads made about swaping to a 160 amp 3G but never really understood a few things.

I have a 1995 Bronco with a 351.

Whats the vehicles that i can go and pull a bigger amp alternator from, and directly bolt it on. I know that some people had to grind away at the bracket but thats no worry to me.

Now what about bigger cables? Ive seen many people run a 2 guage wire and inline fuse. I see that RJM injection has 2 guage cables and a big inline fuse for 40 bucks. Is this absolutely needed? Heres a picture of the cables.

160 amp (3G) Installation in a 96 Source: by vegasbronco1 - he used his current alt's pulley

130 amp (3G) Installation in a 95 Source: by jam0o0

by Ryan;

"The $20 alternator tested was from a 1990-95 Ford Taurus 3.8L

All of these Ford vehicles had the 130amp 3G

(1994-95) Ford Mustang 5.0L

(1994-00) Ford Mustang 3.8L

(1994-97) Ford Thunderbird, Mercury Cougar 3.8L

(1990-95) Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable 3.8L

(1993-99) Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable 3.0L

(1995-98) Ford Windstar 3.8L & 3.0L

(1991-94) Lincoln Continental 3.8L

(1992-97) Ford F Series Pickup

(1992-96) Ford E Series Van

Be carefull there was a 95amp 3G, it's ok, but not high-power

Most of the 130amp 3G's will crank out 140-160amps.

there are about 6 different mounting styles. 2 are good:

I did a Motorcraft Cross Ref search (Buyers Guide) Reman Alternator - Alternators & Generators

via Ford MC for:

Part No: GL477RM Desc: Reman Alternator - Alternators & Generators

Manufacturer: MOTORCRAFT

Years: 94 - 00

Applications: 17

App Years Make Model Engine Qty Per Vehicle

7 96-00 FORD All Models V6-232 3.8L 1

2 94-95 FORD MUSTANG V6-232 3.8L 1

2 94-95 FORD THUNDERBIRD V6-232 3.8L 1

1 94-94 FORD All Models V8-302 5.0L 1 (SUSPECT)

1 95-95 FORD All Models V8-302 5.0L 1 (SUSPECT)

2 96-97 MERCURY All Models V6-232 3.8L 1

2 94-95 MERCURY COUGAR V6-232 3.8L 1

Note this Listing is for reman alt applications (and the Vehicle Application is intended for models that had the 3G as standard or OPTIONAL equipment)and does not include complete Cross Ref for OEM 3G applications; most Police Crown Vics have em too as well as Ambulances, etc. Have em checked if you get one from a yard.. they all prob have worn internals.

yo!

Sorry for da delay, am away from home now...

See Clarko' Link I posted...

He states; "...If you have a 93-96 302 or 351W: you have a Side Mount 3G already but a 95 amp one. You DO NOT need to get a wiring harness, as since you already have a 3G, it's plug and play!!! I strongly urge you to get a larger charge cable and megafuse though. This is your current alt:

see pics he posted; and he then wrote; "...This is the one you need:

For a 130 amp....:

93-96 V8 Econoline with Air Conditioning or the High Output Alternator options

97-03 V6 Econoline E-Series or F-150

95-01 4.0 V6 Explorer or Ranger

The Side Mount can be swapped into:

1993-1997 5.0L, 5.8L & 7.3L Bronco/F-Series/E-Series

You'll need the one for late serp. vehicles.

The Side Mount can be swapped into:

1993-1997 5.0L, 5.8L & 7.3L Bronco/F-Series/E-Series

Other vehicles that use a Side Mount alternator..."

Now I see that he also comments about the 'stangs...; "...If you have an 87-92 302 or 351W: you have a 2G alternator. This is an early serpentine style. This can only be replaced with a Pivot Mount w/ 7.00
