Radiator-Upgrade suggestions?

351w, bored .60, c6 tranny, non-EEC, tons of mods

 

I noticed a little bit of coolant leakage from my radiator recently, so I'm guessing its time to replace the old fella.  I've done a lot of upgrades to the B-Co, I figured the radiator could use an upgrade.  Initial assessment is that it came stock with the HD radiator and tranny cooler, and it still has the re-done radiator with tranny cooler.  Any suggestions for an upgrade to what is currently installed??  

 

I did the electric fan conversion, so for any suggestions, please include provisions for the electric fan upgrade.  Thanks in advance.

Shroud most likely will Not fit, but you have the electric fan.

May be available at NAPA, Adance Auto, etc.

 

I would at least flush out your E4OD COOLER.

Looking at the supermotors post by Tim C, my current radiator is 3" (Heavy Duty, I think) and not the 1" radiator, although I'm not certain if its Modine or not.  Also, I have a C6 tranny, but I image you mean flush out the cooler regardless of tranny type.

Yo,

Yes, I meant, flush out the original cooler and in case you purchase a new cooler, flush that out too with automatic transmission fluid.

Parts store sell rubber golf tee type plugs for the transmission lines so it doesn't leak while cooler is out.

 

BTW, you probably have the Optional Trailer Towing Package that consisted of; Trailer wiring harness, heavy-duty turn signal flasher, rear stabilizer bar (front standard), quad front and heavy-duty rear shocks and super engine cooling (HD radiator & auxiliary transmission cooler).

It does have the Trailer Towing Package.  By request, FORD sent me a break down of the options included on my rig, by my VIN.   Thanks for the info.  It looks like a F250 radiator might be what im looking for.  It has the 4 rows, and made of all metal.  Thanks again!

I've been running a 4-core radiator in my 1990 5.8L for many years with good success.  It never has reached a hot stage at all in the desert during summer, but I do sometimes shield off part of it during cold winter spells in order to add some heat to the engine.  I would rather shield off some during winter than overheat in the west Texas desert areas during summer....

I didn't quite understand if you are using the radiator tranny cooler plus the separate tranny cooler that sets in front of the radiator or not.  If you don't have the front mounted one, find one in the junk yard and use it.  It makes a big difference in the overall engine temperature.  Like MaximusBronk, I never had a problem with heat after doing that combined with the HD radiator.

It is piped so the tranny fluid goes through the front cooler as well as the radiator section.

My rig has the tranny cooler mounted in front of the radiator.  Is there another tranny cooler besides the one mounted to the radiator???

Yes, it should run through that one as well as the transmission cooler coils in the radiator.  My plumbing is arranged so it comes  from the transmission to the front mounted cooler  and then through the radiator cooling coils and back to the transmission.front mounted cooler.

Bringing this thread back to life..

Is it more beneficial to have the trans fluid go to the auxiliary trans cooler first and then to radiator trans cooler, or to the radiator trans cooler first and then to the auxiliary trans cooler

Fluid Cooler Hose(s)

Removal

  1. Place a drain pan under the fluid cooler hose to be removed.

  1. Loosen the fluid cooler hose clamps.

  1. Remove the fluid cooler hose.

Installation

To install, reverse the removal procedure. Replenish transmission fluid to proper operating levels. Start engine and check for leaks.

Tighten the fluid cooler hose clamps to 3.1-4.3 Nm (27.4-38 lb-in).
