I believe I need a new transmission.  1996 Eddie Bauer.

I used it for the first time in at least 5 years to tow a trailer w a car on it.  Ever since, I get a little vibration or shudder when the truck is about to change gears when I am traveling at highway speed.

Anyway, is there a particular transmission I should look for that would be an upgrade designed to handle towing?

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING

Diagnosis by Symptom

http://www.diesel-dave.com/vehic/manual/stj/stj71a24.htm#extract_1037

The Diagnosis by Symptom Charts give the service technician diagnostic information, direction and possible components, using a symptom as a starting point.

Torque Converter Clutch Operation Concern: Cycling/Shudder/Chatter

Possible Component Reference/Action

242 — ELECTRICAL ROUTINE

Powertrain Control System

Electrical inputs/outputs, vehicle harnesses, powertrain control module, torque converter solenoid, transmission range (TR) sensor, brake on/off switch, throttle position sensor

Refer to Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual for diagnosis. Perform Torque Converter Engagement Test and Pinpoint Tests C and D using Rotunda Transmission Tester 007-00085, Cable and Overlay 007-00107 and the Transmission Range (TR) Sensor Cable "B" (MLPS Manual Lever Position Sensor Cable) 007-00086 or equivalents as outlined in this section. Clear codes, road test and rerun On-Board Diagnostics.

Speed Control Equipped Vehicles NOTE: Refer to Routine No. 212 before you proceed to No. 342.

342 — HYDRAULIC/MECHANICAL ROUTINE

Fluid Condition

Inspect fluid condition. If burnt or contaminated drain fluid from the transmission assembly and converter assembly. Check control attaching bolts for proper torque. Retighten as required. Record and erase On-Board Diagnostics codes. Bring vehicle to normal operating temperature. Perform Transmission Drive Cycle as outlined in this section. Perform On-Board Diagnostics. If condition still exists, continue diagnosis.

Main Controls

Bolts not tightened to specification

Retighten bolts to specification.

Torque converter clutch solenoid malfunction

Refer to Electrical Routine No. 242.

Gaskets damaged

Inspect for damage and replace.

Pump Assembly

Bolts not tightened to specification

Retighten bolts to specification.

Cross leaks

Inspect for porosity/leaks, valve damage; replace pump as required.

Gaskets damaged

Inspect for damage and replace.

Converter clutch regulator valve damaged

Inspect for damage. Service as required.

Stator Support

Teflon® seal on nose of stator damaged, cut, leaking

Inspect for damage. Service as required.

Torque Converter Assembly

End play (excessive), internal leakage

Inspect according to procedures outlined in this section. Service as required.

A wag, Torque Converter Shudder; "...If the shudder occurs a) during the 3-4 or 4-3 shift at HEAVY throttle, or B) at 40mph in 2, OD OFF, and OD, or c) at the same RPM in every gear, or d) coasting, cruising, or in R, or e) during extended light braking, then it is NOT TC clutch shudder; The following is a list of common vehicle concerns that have been misdiagnosed as torque converter clutch shudder. For diagnosis of the following items, refer to the appropriate sections of the workshop manual and the Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis manual (PCED). Spark plugs - check for cracks, high resistance or broken insulators. Plug wires. Fuel injector - filter may be plugged. Fuel contamination - engine runs poorly. EGR valve - valve may let in too much exhaust gas and cause engine to run lean. Vacuum leak - engine will not get correct air/fuel mixture. MAP/MAF sensor - improper air/fuel mixture. HO2S sensor - too rich/lean air/fuel mixture. Fuel pressure - may be too low. Engine mounts -loose/damaged mounts can cause vibration concerns. Axle joints - check for vibration..." by Ford
