How do you know when your hubs need to be replaced? I am pulling my tires of and replacing the tie rods, balI joints, and u joints. Need to know what to look for.

How do I tell what size my tank is?

Thanks,

Chris

Are they manual hubs? If so while the front end is in the air lock them and give the wheels a spin they should turn the driveshaft. When you pull them off make sure there are no extra chunks of metal that fallout. The locking action is easy to see. If they are auto, not sure about 84, then replace them w/manual.

Not sure about the tank size.

Good questions.

Do they work now? If so, then you probably only need to service them. You can get a kit from JBG or your local friendly professional parts store. Remove them, clean, lightly grease and re-assemble. If they are manuals, you may want to upgrade top one of the premium set of hubs that you can also get from JBG or LMC Truck. This may also be a good time to at the least pull the spindles and either service or replace the wheel bearings and check the condition of the axle U-joints. How about rotors, pads and calipers.

How do I tell what size my tank is?
That's a good one, I don't know of any positive visual way to tell. The best way is to run it till it is empty and then fill it up. Maybe someone else knows of a visual way to confirm the size.

@ SeaBronc....

When I rebuilt my NP 208 I replaced all of the u-joints on the drive shaft, and the drive shaft itself. Last summer I replaced the pads, and rotors. When I pull off the wheels, I will check them again. Change the bearings, stabilizers bushings, ball joints, and the u joints on the front end. I looked at the Warn Hubs on JBG, and thinking about the OE with those. Forgot, also replacing the tie rods, and drag link. I will have a weekend, the service manuals, and tons of the penetrating oil.

As for the tank, I will have to drop it, and look at the sending unit. the 33 gal is different from the 25.5. I never let it get low, but I think I have put more in it then 25.

I wish Ford still made parts for the older vehicles.

Thanks....I am getting ready to take care of the front after the holidays. Some things Ford has, but I can't find a damn wiring harness(Painless type) to save my life.
