how do I tell if I have a 31 or 35 spline rear end in my 79 bronco I was wanting to by a complete assembly with locker and 4.56 gears but i'm not sure of the splines is there a quick way to tell with out tear down at this point.

The stock axles are 31-spline, but only way to tell for sure is pull them out. It's not hard to do. Pull off the drum, take out the 4 retaining plate bolts, and the axle should slide out. JSM84

count the high points on the spline. get a white marker or something that will show up so you don't loose track of where you started. mark the starting spline and count around
