Here is an update on "Justice" my 1984 FSB. He is a great truck but there were carb issues with the original Holly, it needed a rebuild so I decided to step up several things. We did a new carb, intake, timing gears/chain, camshaft and lifters (to boost a little more low end power) and then dressed it a little with some super nice valve covers from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard. New plugs, wires, coil and a MAJOR cleaning up of horrific build up on the front and sides of the engine. We painted some stuff to give a fresh, clean look and it is back on the road. We ported and polished the intake manifold ports and gasket matched it opening up the ports a good bit. I can feel the power difference all around, it is more peppy and has good response, no lag at all!
Here are some pics...from where we started to where we ended up....
Anyone looking for an original intake and carb? The dang thing weighs at least 50 pounds!
The leaves came in after we opened thanks to that great shady oak we were working under.
See the wooden plug in the hose at the back of the engine? Yeah, that was me some time back when I put on the headers, thats what happens when you allow a guy who does woodworking to fix a leak. LOL.
I had no idea that engine was gunked up like that. /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> It was incredibly thick! It got scrubbed hard and painted.
Someone has been in this engine pretty deep before, there was blue silicone in place of every gasket.
Now on to the build up pics.....
Ported, polished and gasket matched the new intake. Good for a little more power and efficient burn.
A little paint to freshen up old worn looking parts.
I love these new valve covers from Jeff's (linked above)
A few pics, much cleaner and better to look at.
I was advised on this site by a couple long time bronco owners to drill and port the rear of this partiuclar intake manifold to allow for the coolant to come up, out and back down the other side. I bought the fittings, drilled and tapped the intake and it makes good sense, if you don't eventually it could lead to problems with flow and pressure that could end bad. Don't know why they didn't do it on the manifold from the factory. Oh well
Well that is it for now. I want to figure out how to do cold air induction, for now I am using the original air cleaner (forgot to take the pic) and the air hose to keep the hot engine compartment air down to a minimum. I guess I will end up fabricating something since no one seems to make a kit. I also have to order the Skyjacker 4" Lift System (with shocks and new leaf springs for the rear) and then a little body work will be in order.
I will be getting rid of the old intake and carb, original valve covers, several strange vacuum fittings from the old intake and such, pics will follow before too long of the fittings if anyone is looking for stuff.
Suggestions? Comments? Rotten Fruit?
