sometimes when i'm driving the truck normally(not hard) the transsmission shifts very hard(shakes the entire truck). and sometimes it's just as smooth as can be...what could be causing this? when i was getting the axle seals done, the guy told me the spiders gears were worn out. i know they can cause a small whine/roar, but will it make the shift worse(i'm pretty sure no, just throwing that out there).

I am definately no transmision expert, but I don't see how worn spider gears could cause rough shifting. I do know that the internal parts are sensitive to dirt. When was the last time the the transmission was serviced? (filter and complete fluid change, not just the fluid in the pan)

no clue...i've only had it a month and a half.

i was pretty sure the gears had nothing to do with it, but it's the only other running gear problem i know of.

Yeah... we really need a trans specialist on this forum.

I know squat about transmissions.

I agree with Roadkill that you may want to service the trans and see if that helps.

Also check for loose motor or trans mounts.

The last thing that I can add is that you have a E4OD and that trans is computer controlled.

If any of the sensors that the computer uses to determine shifting are getting flaky, that *may* cause shifting problems. I don't know if shifting problems would include banging so hard that it shakes the truck though.

You may want to check for codes, especially if your ABS light, or check engine light is on.

I would service the trans or have it done, and the sooner the better, you may have a sticky valve that *may* respond to clean fluid. And at the same time look at the mounts.

May want to check the throttle position sensor . The E4OD uses that as an input for line pressure and shift points :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

LOL... Blade, I'll bet you didn't realize that we are responding to a thread that is a year old :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I certainly didn't

Rogmit.

Do you know how to check your trans mount?

When was the last time your tranny was serviced?

and

Do you know how to pull codes?

Because all the info we were giving to this gentleman would be pertinent to you if you are having the same problem.

Oh.. and one more thing...at the end of this thread

http://broncozone.com/forums/index.php?s=&...ost&p=72071

I give instructions on how to test a TPS.

Broncojoe, no i don't know how exactly you check the transmission mount other than physically looking at it, is there a special way to test it?

I don't really know either. I imagined one could just grab onto the trans and give it a good shake, and see if one could get it to bang.

Haynes says to use a large screwdriver or prybar, and pry between the transmission extension housing and the frame crossmember. The trans should not move significantly away from the insulator. IF it does the mount should be replaced.

Here is another thread on baning and bumping noises and things to look at.

I wonder if the two person method mentioned by ShadowD in this thread would work for trans mounts

Wow...this sonuds like the exact problem i'm having. When it tries to shift it'll either slam into the next gear go right in and easy or it'll bang and shake. I can't kick the bronco down without it shaking. So i decided i'm gonna get a rebuild kit...maybe it's one or all of the clutches or the bands are worn. Theres no slipping of any kind that i can tell but i don't like the sounds it makes. If anyone has any better ideas i'm all for it.

There Is a valve connected to the back of your transmission that that controls your shifts based on vacuum {I can't remember what the **** it's called right now} I would try that first by checking for Broken hose or by some chance while you where playing it came disconnected

If he had an older trans, the vacuum modulator would be a good place to start, but he has an E4OD which is computer controlled. The '90 uses sensors such as the Vehicle Speed Sensor VSS, and the Manifold Absolute Pressure MAP, and the Throttle Position Sensor TPS to determine shift points.

I don't know much about auto transmissions, just a little. AS I stated above, the E4OD is computer controlled. You can pull codes to see if each of the sensors I mentioned above are functioning within tolerances. Do you know how to pull codes?

All you need is a 4 inch piece of wire and the ability to count to ten.

The way you describe the shifting issue though I suspect that it is a sticking valve or something internal. (I REALLY do not know), so if you do decide to go the rebuild kit route, I would love it if you would take pictures as you do it, and share them.

Thanks

joe

check your ground connections. i had the same problem, turned out just to be a bad ground. the battery neg cable had come a little bit lose and was moving some, thus causing the intermittent sometimes does, sometimes doesn't problem
