Ok, last question for the day (well, ok, maybe not considering it's only 12:45am, but I'll try)

Regarding lubrication for the 1356. I remember seeing a couple different websites that mentioned using a low-viscosity synthetic motor oil (something like a 30wt) in the BW1356 instead of the usual ATF. Anyone hear, see, read or know about this ? Seems to me that there would be some merit to the idea & the articles mentioned improved shift characteristics (particularly in & out of 4-lo) and to be honest I always felt that ATF was a kinda wimpy lubricant for something with a big honkin' chain spinning around inside it like the 1356. Obviously the question is whether or not the pump can move light-weight motor oil and I suspect it can do it just fine but I've been searching for more than an hour now & I'll be damned if I can find the links or refrences.

Anyone out there know anything about this ? I was getting pretty interested in swapping it out for an NP205 but when I started looking into it a bit more & realized that the 1356 had a low gear of 2.62:1 compared to the NP205's 1.96:1 I decided to reconsider. Anyways, I really do prefer the idea of synthetic motor oil instead of ATF but I just haven't goofed around with these magnesium chain-boxes long enuf to really know.

I don't know Dave. Seems that if it was a good idea there would be more information on it. I haven't seen any reports about failure of the BW due to running trany fluid in it, then again I haven't been looking for them either  . I don't think Ford would have used it in there for very long if trany fluid was causing problems. After all, you are looking for lubrication and trany fluid provides plenty. I use trany fluid in the trany, transfer case and power steering with no complaints. Also, if you had a seal problem, it may be destructive to the trany to have engine oil migrate into it. On the other hand some transfer cases do use other than trany fluid. Warranty is not an issue here, "try it you may like it" :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> or then you may not :( /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> . All I can think of is that engine type oil breaks down easier than trany fluid or they wouldn't be recommending you change it so often.

Good luck,

:)>-

What is the viscocity of ATF compared to 30-wt synthetic motor oil? I agree with Seabronc, stick with the ATF so you don't **** the "oil" pump in the t-case. JSM84
