Sounds like a wiring issue....probably on starter solinoid or starter itself.

OK your description is a little fuzzy to me. By running while you hold the key, does that mean thet the starter is engaged and turning? Or Does it mean that you can relax on the key just a bit to let the starter disengage? If the latter is the case, I would suggest that your ignition switch mounted on top of the lower section of your steering column needs to be adjusted or replaced.
