1988 When I turn the key there's a small click from the starter solenoid. When I jump the starter solenoid, nothing happens. New battery, new cable, new starter
Try running new wires from the solenoid. I did this on my 95 when it did the same kind of knock i think your talking about. If not, may be a bad solenoid.
try the neutral safety switch. to bypass it just look on the drivers side of the engine compartment for a green wiring harness with 8 wires on it. pull it apart and jump the two blue wires with red stipes. dont worry about the othwer wires they are just for reverse lights and 4x4 lights. hope this helps
mine did the same thing. right when i had my wife and kid in the truck. pulled the starter and took it apart. found a bunch of mud and a rock that had managed to jam up in the starter shaft. droped it on the ground a few times, got the rock and mud out. reinstalled and havn't had a problen since.
While you're at it, check the ground connections at the batteryand engine block. Remove and clean both ends, the Engine block end gets sort of crappy sometimes.
As previously suggested do the same for the positive cable from the solinoid.
Also, if you have a meter check the voltage at the starter.
