1996 bronco 5.8 L. has been sitting for a while. I replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor, ran great for a day then starting misfiring. found the cap had cracked and replaced it, still misfired. threw away the MSD cap and rotor and got the stock ones, ran great for two days then misfired again. had it checked on the computer at the auto parts store and said my EGR valve was bad, so I replaced it and it ran good for two days, driving home from work and it starting losing power and backfiring. Managed to limp 3 more miles to my driveway where it backfired really loud, died and coasted in next to the house. I had spark going to the distributor but not the plugs. I checked my timing and found it jumped 180 degrees. pulled the distributor and got it back to the proper placement. still won't start and have no spark going to the distributor. replaced with another set of plug wires and tested the ICM with a test light and it blinked while cranking, so I replaced the ignition coil. STILL WON'T START??? I did check my timing again, piston all the way up in cylinder 1 and rotor is on 1. I love my FORDS but this one has me puzzled.

yo Steve,

Are plug wires routed as per diagram atop radiator?

Spark Plug Wire Routing & Firing Order TSB 94-04-10 for 87-93 5.0 & 94-96 5.0 & all 5.8 - engine miss, spark knock, buck/***** surge and other driveability concerns;

MIESK5 NOTE; The firing order for 1994 5.0Ls & all 5.8Ls is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. On these vehicles the #1 and #3, or #5 and #6 spark plug wires must be separated to eliminate the possibility of an induction crossfire. To eliminate the possibility of the coil wire becoming disconnected, route the coil wire under the spark plug wires at the distributor cap.

Pull a few plugs and look for a lean condition = intake man, EGR Valve , throttle body gasket, Vac Leaks, bad Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) or weak fuel press from Pump.. Pull vac line from FPR - any gas or gas smell = replace FPR

Disconnect the vacuum line going to the fuel pressure regulator. Fuel pressure typically jumps to 40 PSI ± 3 PSI . can get into PSI testing later..

Rich plug = O2 sensor /conn/wiring etc prob (should have a Code in KOER), ECT Sensor prob (code too)
