93 bronco with 5.0 and e4od. i recently got this truck and did soon after started having starting problems.

It has a new ICM, EEC, ignition coils, plugs and wires, distributor and cap, fuel pump, relays, and new fuses.

I believed the ignition issue was resolved.

I then did my front end swap and that same day when I cranked it to test drive the transmission started to act up. No first or OD, and hard shift into reverse.

So i thought maybe i had inadvertently pinched a wire or just a big coincidence. whatever...weirder things have happened so I checked my wires and changed the VSS and MLPS. Didnt help with the tranny issue.

But starting issue seemed to be okay until a few days later. Didn't want to start.

I wiggled the distribution box on the fender and it cranked right up. Started just fine for over a week so I didn't think too much more about it.

But was still trying to figure out tranny.

Then this morning it didnt want to start again. No power to the fuel pump and wiggling the wires didn't help.

I pulled codes again and got:

koeo 62 neutral safety switch (mlps) circuit failure

koeo 52 power steering switch open closed (unrelated issue)

constant memory code of 29 insufficient input from vss. which i didn't have last time i ran codes before i changed the vss (which was changed bc i thought it migh have had something to do with the tranny issue.)

i also had changed the mlps and the pigtail so getting a code on that suddenly is odd.

i have probably missed some of the troubleshooting tips i have done...tested alot of wires etc...

but if anyone has any ideas on where to go from here, input would be appreciated. I am convinced that there is a wiring gremlin somewhere that is causing my tranny issue and intermittent starting issue.

For the time and trouble this has been, i almost could have replaced ALL the wiring lol

oh yeah, i know 93 broncos are supposed to have 3 digit codes...code reader is giving me 2 digit codes. don't understand that myself.

yo f4wdking,

WELCOME!

2 Digit to 3 Digit "...Ford went from two-digit to three-digit EEC IV Self-Test codes in 1991 to service the increasing number of service codes required to support various government On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) regulations. The phase-in from two-digit to three-digit codes started in the 1991 model year. 1996 Broncos have OBD II that has 3-4 numbers beginning with a Letter; usually a P..."

My best guess based on past experience, you are getting 2 digit codes because;

Is correct EEC in it now? One way to check original, as built EEC FORD Part Number is to use the Ford VECI Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) Decal

Vacuum Diagrams & Calibration Parts List for 88 & UP now On-Line at Ford:

go to http://www.motorcraftservice.com

Click "What's New" in left panel

Scroll to: "VECI labels are now accessible through Quick Guides without a subscription."

Enter applicable info (need to know your Calibration number off of your PCM or driver side door jamb label

I'll be back asap; have to see a doc.

internal circuitry of the ICM will have one of two possible arrangements: push-start (gray; ~'85-93), or computer controlled dwell (CCD) (black; 94-96)). NOTE THAT MOST AFTERMARKET MODULES ARE GRAY, regardless of type or year. If the ICM connector has a R/LB wire between the R/LG & Pk (pin #3), it's push-start; if the wire is Y/Bk, it's CCD

yo, Now that I got past the usual Ignition suspects;

re your "I wiggled the distribution box on the fender and it cranked right up. Started just fine for over a week so I didn't think too much more about it... Then this morning it didnt want to start again. No power to the fuel pump and wiggling the wires didn't help..."

Guessing that you may have also wiggled the TFI harness when you did this?

Here is a 96 diagram that shows the close proximity of the Power Distribution Box & harness (#7) to ICM Harness (#4);

regarding the 2 digit codes: per my title and the vin this truck is definitely a 1993. The EEC is brand new from Oreillys so provided they gave me the right one...

I am going to go work on this a while now and will get back to you

yo,

yw,

OK, The Bronco is a validated 93 per VIN & title

now see what the calibration number is; listed on the driver door jamb label

& compare to same on the EEC from O'Reilly

---

"Every computer has a main sticker on the 60-pin connector that identifies the computer and holds the most information about the computer. If you have an EEC in your hands and wonder what it came out of this list is for you. If you are looking for an EEC in a junkyard or swap meets this is for you too. If you just wondered what computers Ford used in which vehicle this is also for you. I would not be upset if you printed this page off for your records, in fact I recommend taking it with you so you have an advantage finding that special EEC."

yo, It happens!

My former dealership's good person parts manager once spent much time locating a new Ford 4WABS Module for me and having it shipped to him overnight at No cost to me.

I arrived at the dealership minutes before it arrived; when he opened the clean box that had the Ford Motorcraft printing on it along with the correct Part Number, a dirty, used and abused Module smiled at us!

The module came from a Ford warehouse and after Ford logisitcs folks tracked it down, they called the Manager a day later and said the Box went directly from the manufacturer (Raybesto) to that warehouse in 1996.

So, someone was swapped @ Raybestos, or in transit to warehouse or in transit to dealer.

I don't see where you did anything about this code. Maybe I missed it, but if you haven't it is pointing your nose at the starting problem. If that circuit is open, you can not start the engine, you won't even be able to get it to turn over. Try wiggling the shifter in Park and in Neutral. The shifter has to be in one or the other to close this circuit. see the attached diagrams.

Good luck,

ok i was having the starting issue previously and it didn't throw that code. but i changed that anyway thinking it could be part of the problem. i pulled codes again and got that. BUT the truck turns over just fine all the time and starts when it wants to, lol. Like i went out there this morning and of course it cranked right up. go figure. but i did look at the calibration code on the door and it says 2-54L-R12. When i went to the site above, i did not see that code under ANY model year or engine type available. However, when i went to 93 bronco with a 5.0 and just picked a random calibration, the engineering number does match the one on my eec.

keep in mind that the intermittent starting issue has been from day one. the tranny issue started the same day immediately after I had changed the EEC which i can tell has been changed before.

So yes i get that the code is a problem but it is not the source of my problem.

yo,

I went through my notes (because I lost my broncolinks.com site and back-up due to my Host's mistakes and more Cal # changes)and found that 92 Broncos w/5.0 had Calibration Code 2-54L-R12

http://web.archive.org/liveweb/http://content.chiltonsonline.com/TSB/displayTSBHandler.ashx?assetID=36186&key=6kAUBD5BruOJf%2f3tgozUqjXM3RdbjcQqW4sVWiE%2fp2IojfpfKqM07dr61%2bQAWHtT9lyK2FOmsr5PqLg%2b42AW3bNdzj9a1nENC6khc0byHJmEamdBmbRozA%3d%3d

See Table and Note at end

It shows replacment Calibration Code 2-54X-R12 for 2-54L-R12; but 2-54X-R12 does not appear in the VECI LIST!

So, stop bhy Ford dealer parts and ask them to validate your cal # and engr #

ok and also i am a little worried about the fact that every autoparts site with the eec ending in aea says it is for an auto transmission and comes preprogrammed but if i look for ones that specifically say they are for an e40d then the eec has to end in aha or ahb.

which tells me that it was possibly preprogrammed for an a0d hence the immediate tranny issue.
