I have an 85 bronco 2 with a 302 in it it ill turn over but not fire we put it in top dead center and made sure all the wires on the distributor were in the rigght place and they are we took number one spark plug out and turned it oever to see if it was getting a spark but it isn't the people who put it in the truck took the wires that left the distributor ( there are 3) that go to a plug then somewhere cut them and did one of those jypsy jobs on it and we don't know what wires go where does anyone have a diagram of how the wires are suppose to go or anything?

The firing order fot an 85 302 is 1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8 . The number one cylinder is the front one on the right side of the truck.

1 2 3 4 right side

5 6 7 8 left side

Good luck,

:)>-

I'm not sure that I understood the wires you were talking about. If it is the ones going to the distributor pickup here is the diagram for those. If someone cut them, you may be better off going to a junk yard and getting a wire harness from a doner truck. Also, a common problem with the Duraspark II ignition is the pickup in the distributor. I'll include a trouble shooting proceedure with the attachments.

There are two ignition system diagrams attached one for an EEC system and one for the duraspark system, I'm not sure which one you have.

All these diagrams come from the EVTM. See my post that is pinned at the top of the How To forum. I suggest you get one of them if you are going to maintain you r truck. It is one of the most valuable troubleshooting manuals you can get and they don't cost much.

Good luck,

:)>-

My friendly Napa man gave me the wrong pickup coil for my 302. Make sure you take the old in with you when you get the new part. Then do the wires, one at a time starting with the right back going forward, and the right left going forward, using the longest wires for the back of course. Also, make sure your plugs are all gapped properly to .040. Use a little dielctric (silicone) grease on the boots to help snap them on and take them off later.

Oh, yeah, almost forgot. If you're not getting fire to plugs, just go ahead and get new wires and plugs. I use autolites. As long as you replace them everytime you do a tune up, you shouldn't have any problems. They last just as long as the expensive ones.

Well, if they messed with the wires the the distributor cap you can bet that it is probably out of time as well!

I got a distributor for it and the one in the bronco was not even the one for it so we replaced it and put it in time and still no spark so we replaced the coil with a one from a 351 winser and it still didn't work so i had this cobra control module sitting the basement so we replaced it and all i heard my friend say when he was seeing if the spark plug had spark or not was "ohhhhhh woooooohoo it has spark" so we hooked up the spark plugs and sure enough it tried to start and after a while it ran but we need to now if theres a sertain degree it supose to be in time to or if we need a timeing gun to do it or what.

Timing lights/guns are nice to use when trying to figure out the timing of the vehicle. You can however turn the distributor cap until it "runs right" (that would be the redneck way of doing it).

Wratchet is right, if the distributor is set in the right tooth, you can adjust it by feel. The vacuum connection will be slightly toward the right side of the engine or nearly strait forward.

If you want to get it exact, yes you need a timing light. Most are set between 8 and 13 degrees before TDC. If it is the same size engine that came with the original truck, there should be an emissions sticker on the right side of the radiator mount that gives you the timing proceedure.

Good luck,

:)>-

My bronco's 302 is out of a 79 thunderbird. We were able to adjust the timing with a vacuum timing...then my husband messed with it, knocked it out of time...so my dad came along and adjusted it by feel. So it can be adjusted. The vacuum advance module on my bronco is nearly straight forward.
