what is this thing

I have an 89 eddie bauer edition, i was under the dash today and behind the passenger side kick panel there is a black plastic box approx. size of the ecu. it has a red light on the side of it, and when the ignition is on if i press the white button the light comes on, and stays on for 1 to 1 and a half minutes than shuts off.

does anyone have any idea what the **** this thing is

That may be the 4WD test module/shift relay if you have the push-button transfer case.

now, the black box is the Inertia Switch w/ a red button on top; it shuts off fuel pump & engine will shut down ina few secs too in frontal accident/bump

ok guys its the t-case controller, my inertia switch is under the driver side dash by the brake pedal
