I have a 1985 Ford Bronco. Would buying a new water pump help the cooling process? I would buy anything to help the engine stay cooler. My engine runs a little to hot. Any suggestions would be helpful.

If you want it to run cool, I would suggest flushing the cooling system first, then replacing the water pump and upper and lower hoses. While the upper hose is off, put in a new 160 degree thermostat. That should get your cooling system off to a good start. Depending on your budget, you could even add an electric fan in front of your radiator to help out, and if you have even more money, you could upgrade to a 3 or even 4 core radiator. You'll be running cool as a cuke then!

I already replaced the upper and lower hoses and I put in a 180 degree thermostat. I only have a 2 core radiator.

Mine use to run a little too hot in the summer so I added a transmission oil cooler. That probably was the single most effective modification I made in keeping my engine temperature down.

Good luck,

Is belt slipping? if not:

Flush & refill coolant sys; clean rad core & condenser off yourself (both sides) w/garden hose and dishwashing soap. Get all the bug corpses out too. Don't spray engine or wiring; I put cardboard sections inside behind radiator to prevent water spray from fouling all the connectors and ign.

if not helping:

Get a coolant sys pressure check & test for combustion products in the coolant ; doesn't cost much; find a Radiator Repair shop; they usually have lower prices and do it well; or Ford

Youc ould pressure test the cooling system yourself, just buy the kit. I use the one we have at work. The only things is, if you add pressure to something that may be weakened, you'll find the problem and have to fix it too.

I'd replace my radiator cap in addition to the hoses and thermostat. It's cheap, and needs replacing every so often.

You might think of running headers if you still have exhaust manifolds. Check your oil too! I have been using a quart of Lucas Oil with the last oil change, and so far things are running smooth and cool. Unless you are certain your water pump isn't working, it's really just a waste of money to replace it.

what a coincdence, DIY channel had a 92-96 F150 cooling sys show on this morning................

They replaced rad., pump, T'stat, and esp the fan clutch assy.

So, ck fan clutch by hand to see if it is binding.

And any weeping from weep hole in wp

Do you have a CEL? if so, or anyway, test the Engine Coolant Temp Sensor on the 85 it is located on the neck that goes to the heater. thnx to JP for this pic!

How do you check the fan clutch to see if it is binding? I dont understand what you mean by that.

Spin the fan as hard as you can on an engine that has not been started that day. If the fan rotates more than five times, you can bet the clutch is bad. You should feel some resistance and the fan may spin up to three times, depending on the ambient temperature. If it binds, replace it.

Check for slop in the clutch. With the engine off and the fan stopped, try to rock the fan blade fore-aft to feel for free play in the clutch. Don't confuse this with flex in the blade. If the fan moves half an inch or more, something's wrong inside the clutch
