Hello,

I'm trying to access the instrument cluster on my 81 Bronco so that I can replace the dash lights, but I can't figure out how to get the knobs off of the windshield washer and headlight switches. My Chiltons manual says that I need a hook tool to release the **** lock tab.

What's a hook tool? Is there something I can use as an equivelent? Where's the lock tab? How do I release it? All that stuff. I can't see behind the knobs so I don't know what's back there.

Thanks for any help.

hook tab is just a angled piece of metal at about this angle / that fits into a notch on a trianglular rod of metal the hook will pull it out of the notch letting you slide the knobs off the rod. If you pull the headlight **** out to the on position you should see the metal rod or a bit of plastic missing where you put the hook part in. The hook will be relativily far back in the ****. Good luck. (this is on my 92 and im ASSUMING they are at least similar)

You could use a mirror and maybe a small screwdriver instead of a hook tool.

Thanks for the help, finally got them off and replaced all of the bulbs.

Do you know why the FASTEN SEAT BELT and BRAKE dash lights still don't work? As they are all turned on by one large circuit board, I know there aren't any loose wires to the lights themselves. I imagine there are switches somewhere that aren't working.

Thanks!

The seat belt light operates off a switch in the driver side seat buckle. as you can see from the attached diagram, they both have a common source of power.

Good luck,

:)>-
