Vapor separator tank inside Bronco

Hi. For a long time I've had this gas odor in my Bronco. <_< About a month ago I put a soft top on the Bronco, and had to remove the long trim panels on the inside of the truck. The owner before me had mounted 6x9" speakers in the panels. To my surprise, when I removed the left panel, I found a sort of plastic tank which he had cut a piece off when he cut the speaker hole in the panel...After looking in the shop manual I found out the function of this tank...No wonder there was gas odor inside :-& I've looked around, but so far I haven't been able to find a replacement. Should I replace it, or can I manage without it?

I've not seen one in working order. The few I've had were neglected/abandoned.

I would bypass it somehow....OR ...If the exposed hole is small.., can you patch it..?

However., unless you smell strong fumes in that area, it's not 100% that your fumes are coming fr. that unit.

The fumes are definetely coming from that area. Especially when I fill up the gas tanks, I can smell the strong fumes from the vapor tank. The whole top is cut off...There is a plastic hose coming up alongside the tank. Think it's supposed to go into the missing top of the tank. If I could find a used one I would try to change it. Problem is, where I live they're not growing on trees. Live in Norway, Europe. Any tips on where I can get a used one?

unless you need it for smog control in Norway you can cut it out and by pass the whole mess I have never seen that device in any bronco I have looked at, even stock broncos,,, but bully might have it installed ahahaha he is the expert on stock broncos and the proper fit and purpose of all small parts and pieces.

Well, I'm going to wing it here.

It is probably a "Vapor Canister", http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fd/full.aspx?Page=44 that is designed to hold fumes from the tank, especially when the sun is heating up your gas. It works in conjunction with a heat controlled valve mounted on the intake manifold. The design is to have the engine **** in those fumes when you start the engine thus prevent them from venting into the atmosphere. After starting the valve closes the path from the vapor tank top the carburetor off so gas will not be sucked through it. Just a note: if the path is not closed after the engine starts you will have an uncontrolled path for gas to the engine which of course will cause the engine to run extremely rich. Also, I don't seem to find one for the EBs from the same supplier.

If you decide to bypass it, it would be best to run the vent line from the tank to a small filter, (purpose of the filter is to prevent the line from becoming clogged). This will allow the vent line to serve it's secondary purpose and that is to prevent your tank from over pressuring on very hot days or from developing negative pressure on cold days. It keeps the pressure inside the tank at the outside atmospheric pressure level.

Thanks for all your replies. Sent an e-mail to Tom's Bronco Parts and they have used ones for $49.- With shipping to Norway with USPS the total came to $118.- Going to stick with the original stuff. That way I'm sure it's going to work!
