i just got a new 351W in my bronco and some guys think they can hear loose rockers or valves. My ears aren't quite trained to that level yet, so i'm gonna ask, how can you tell if they are? and if so, how do you adjust them?

Ford production motors from 70 something on are not adjustable you just torque them down against there stops and call it good . The rail rocker models have a stud with a step sticking out of the head , the fulcrum ball tightens against that step and the pedastal mount models have a 5/16 bolt that goes through the whole assembly and torques down to the head . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

If you can't hear a worn rocker, you probably don't have a problem. A worn rocker doesn't take much of an ear to hear. However, you could take a piece of hose and probe around while the engine is running and listen in the area of the valve covers. Just be careful around the fan, it could hurt you.

Another possibility for valve noise is poor oil flow to the lifters and rockers which could be from either poor pressure or clogged passages. If the engine is very old, be prepared for a possible shock when removing the valve covers, you may find a lot of crud under there, just clean it up. Don't panic, just a couple of possibilities :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> .

If you remove the valve covers, you can feel of the rockers. They shouldn't move much at all. If they do, and the nuts are tight, they are worn. You can replace them with new ones and as long as the push rods are OK, that should solve your problem, providing it is a rocker arm.

Oh yah, if you take the valve covers off, replace the gaskets :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> .

Good luck,

:)>-

Thing is, the motor has less than 4000 miles on it. It was broken in properly and all too. Oh well, i cant hear anything over the exhaust leak, so i dont think the rockers are bad, i believe they're fine. Thanks for the info, i did not know the valves were not adjustable. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
