If you can't hear a worn rocker, you probably don't have a problem. A worn rocker doesn't take much of an ear to hear. However, you could take a piece of hose and probe around while the engine is running and listen in the area of the valve covers. Just be careful around the fan, it could hurt you.
Another possibility for valve noise is poor oil flow to the lifters and rockers which could be from either poor pressure or clogged passages. If the engine is very old, be prepared for a possible shock when removing the valve covers, you may find a lot of crud under there, just clean it up. Don't panic, just a couple of possibilities

If you remove the valve covers, you can feel of the rockers. They shouldn't move much at all. If they do, and the nuts are tight, they are worn. You can replace them with new ones and as long as the push rods are OK, that should solve your problem, providing it is a rocker arm.
Oh yah, if you take the valve covers off, replace the gaskets
