I just bought an 89 Bronco (full size of course) with a 4 speed.

The 4 speed just isn't doing it for me. Especially the granny 1st gear.

Is there any other 5 speed transmission that is a simple swap (like a mazda/ toyo kogyo or a ZF) direct fit or needing very little modification

also, the battery gauge is always in the red but the battery light on the dash isn't on. It goes to mid way and then back into the red by the "8"

The oil pressure gauge is the same way? are these simple fixes?

Try a search for "transmission swaps". I don't know for sure what 4-sp you currently have, and whether it has overdrive or not. But, the ZF SF-42 5-sp light duty is available for the 302/351W, and there are some posts on that with links. AS for the gauges, they may be separate issues, and a search may help there. too. Check the cables and test the battery. IF the oil pressure gauge is near the "L" in low, you may want to add a mecahnical gauge to get a true reading. Low oil pressure after warm-up is normally a bad sign, due to worn mains or other oiling problem. The sending unit can also just be the problem, JSM84

it's the 4speed non overdrive, with the granny gear. I want a 5 speed and a direct swap would be brilliant.

the gauges dont work functionally sometimes. sometimes i get a good voltage reading and sometimes i get a good oil reading. other times i dont. I do smell some oil burning or blow by or something, i dont know yet.

Any tranny you swap will need a x-member and possible new linkage. The mazda tranny will swap easier because it was offered, but it is not as strong as the other trannies available.

The guage problem sounds like a bad ground somewhere if it is occasional. Remember: the gauages don't have a very wide reading range on these Broncos, so using those to try and diagnosis a problem will give you alot of headaches. Get some real guages to see what your engine is really doing.

well after much testing and smacking the shit out of the dashboard, the battery and oil pressure gauges went to the normal sides., why would i have to smack the shit out the dash? (and the parking brake light comes on when i hit it :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> )

for an easy and pretty much bolt in swap, the M5OD is a decent manual to swap in, and it has overdrive in 5th. the ZF is a much stronger 5 spd manual, but its somewhat spendy to find. junkyards are proud of them
