My 1998 Bronco started leaking fluid between the transmisson & Transfer Case. So I am planing to start working on it Saturday night. I have replaced the rear seal on the wifes jeep before and that was no big deal just drop the drive shaft and pop it in. I have pulled engines and transmissions out of 4WD truck before but it has been a long, long time. My main question is because I don't rememeber is the real seal the some as the 2WD the round pressed seal that goes around the output shaft?

I was goining to disconnect the transfer case and slid it back and replace the seal. Also the parts store was all confussed and I had to order two seprate seals because they didn't know which seal it was. My Bronco has the Auto Trans w/OD and the manual Transfer case don't know which one it is no eletric crap or push button. I just don't understand why they had to order the seal (AutoZone) they wanted to know which transfer case I had.

I didn't know so I just ordered both but they won't be in till Tuesday which you would think they would have in stock. So I'm not sure if they know what they are talking about. So if anyone knows which seal it is so I can make sure they did order the right seal and maybe they do have it in stock. I just don't know what they are talking about. Please help.

Have you considered going to a real auto parts supplier, like Napa for example. My experience is that a parts supplier that deals with mechanics all day is a better place to go than the big chain stores. The people behind the counter just tend to know more and don't get all glassy eyed when you are looking for something that isn't on their computer menu.

I'm not sure why it would make a difference on which transfer case you have, but they always seem to have those questions like, "Does your truck start on Wednesdays only?, Are the wheels round or square?, What color hair does your girl friend have? Do you use Exxon or Mobil gas? etc.

Good luck,

:)>-

Well after that experience at AutoZone which is normally good. I went across the Street to (Advanced Auto) which is always a bad experience. I talked the the young kid behind the counter who had a beat up 1985 Bronoc parked out front of the store and was just as proud of his Bronco as I am of mine. He pulled the part right up and sold it to me for $3.99 It looks like a standard output shaft seal other then it has a longer rubber boot on it. Dose that sound about right to anyone I'll find out when I pull the Transfer Case back. I hope I don't have to run to Sears to buy another tool the (Wife) would hate that. I have never had to do his type of repair before always replaced the seal when it was out of the truck. Whats the shortest amont of time anyone took to replace the seal and get it back on the road? Should be able to get it back to gether no later then Sunday??? Need my Bronco for work Monday.
