Starting yesterday, when I start my '95 5.8l, the 4wd and low range lights on the instrument cluster come on. If I push either of the buttons the lights go out and then after a few seconds they come back on. This keeps happening until I put it in neutral and push the low range button - then lights will go out and stay off.

Then after I start driving, it shifts up very harshly and the OD Off light on the shift lever comes on and starts flashing (lights by 4wd buttons stay off). Pushing the OD button has no effect once it starts flashing. (If you push the OD button before you start driving, the light goes on and off normally.) Same for 4wd and low range lights. If you push them after getting the initial clearing, they seem to work normally.

At the same time this started, the speedometer/odeometer stopped working. Tach and other gauges still work.

Any ideas? Hopefully, simple ideas.

Thanks,

Doc

My guesses are, speed sensor, a connection to the speed sensor, or garbage on the tone ring in the rear differential.

Good luck,

:)>-

I agree w/da Seabronc; have it checked for a DTC at AutoZone for free; prob have a 452 (M) Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) problem - causes PSOM to go South as well as the TCIL flashing and hard shifts

For the Xfer Case prob. "Most units fail because of water or mud intrusion. Carefully inspect

motor boot or protective coverings. Be sure connector seals can

keep water and debris out. Check wiring harness and connector.

Replace or repair wiring as necessary."

btw; before these 2 issues appeared, did you run through high water or a car wash?
Pretty much high and dry then. I have had issues with corrosion under the back (from up north), and am going to check the connections too.

Thanks for the information in both of the forums. It should be helpful. The Auto Zone here that I first called said they could only check codes if the check engine light was on. I'm going to check another store and see if they are a little more up on things.
